Here are some tips & tricks for making these red velvet rice krispie treats-

Can I make these with chocolate cereal?

The addition of some red velvet cake mix in these treats gives them a nice subtle chocolate flavor. If you want more chocolate than you can make these with a chocolate crispy rice cereal such as cocoa krispies or cocoa pebbles. You can make the recipe exactly as it is written just with chocolate cereal instead of regular rice krispies cereal.

Can I make them heart shaped?

If you are making these red velvet rice krispies treats for valentine’s day they are super cute made into heart shapes! To to that you can make the recipe as written and then use a cookie cutter to cut out hearts. Or you can press the mixture directly into the cookie cutter to make individual treats. See this posts for more tips for making rice krispie heart shaped treats.

Can I use regular food coloring-

The kind of food coloring you use for these treats can make a big difference! Red food coloring often has a bitter taste when too much is used. It is important to use the right food coloring to create a beautiful color without ruining the flavor. My preference is the Wilton No-Taste Red Gel food coloring. You can use a good amount to add a ton of color without altering the flavor. If you only have regular gel food coloring or liquid use it sparingly so that you don’t alter the taste of the crispy treats.

How do I make them look like raw meat?

You may have seen “raw meat” crispy treats around Halloween or April Fool’s Day. This fun and delicious prank is just these rice krispie treats presented in a different way.

To create this effect you can loosely scoop the finished cereal mixture onto Styrofoam meat trays (get them at your grocery store or butcher) and wrap the top with plastic wrap to create a packaged ground beef effect. You can also pat the sticky cereal mixture into “patties” and package them the same way! Place parchment paper in between them to make serving easier! They are perfect for taking to a Halloween party!

Is uncooked cake mix safe to eat?

In this recipe you’ll be using cake mix but not baking it. So you may wonder, since eating raw flour is not recommended, if it is safe? Yes it is! You’ll be adding the cake mix to the freshly melted butter and marshmallow mixture that is hot enough to kill any potential germs. However if you are still concerned you can follow these instructions – to heat treat your cake mix.

How to Store These Treats-

You can store these treats in an airtight container at room temperature.

Help I don’t have a Piping Bag!

A piping bag makes a great way to get a pretty drizzle of white chocolate across the top of your red velvet treats. If you don’t have a piping bag you can use a zip top baggie. Allow your melted white chocolate to cool a little and then place it in the baggie. Cut a small piece off of the corner and pipe chocolate across your treats. You can also use a spoon to drizzle or spread the white chocolate across your treats.

Here’s What You’ll Need for These Red Velvet Krispie Treats

1- 10 oz Bag Mini Marshmallows– I like to use mini marshmallows because they melt faster. But you can use large marshmallows if that is what you have.

½ Cup Butter– These treats take more butter than regular rice krispie treats because of the cake mix added in. You can use salted butter or unsalted butter. It doesn’t need to be softened because you’ll be melting it.

6 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal– Any brand of crispy rice cereal works!

1 Cup Red Velvet Cake Mix– Use your favorite brand of cake mix!

1 tsp Vanilla– Make sure to use pure vanilla extract.

1/3 Cup White Chocolate Chips or White Candy Melts – Use fresh white chocolate chips so that they melt well. You can also use chopped white chocolate bark or candy melts if you prefer.

Taste Free Red Gel Food Coloring – This is optional and will help give your treats a richer red color.

Here’s How to Make Red Velvet Rice Krispies Treats-

The first thing you’ll want to do is prepare a 13×9 inch pan. Line the pan with parchment paper, wax paper or aluminum foil and then butter the pan.

Next in a large pot over medium heat melt butter and marshmallows stirring frequently until completely melted and smooth.

Add in vanilla and mix until well blended.

Add in cake mix and continue mixing until it is all evenly incorporated.

Remove the marshmallow mixture from the heat and add in red food coloring. Stir in ½-1 teaspoon of red gel food coloring and mix until well blended. Add in additional coloring and stir until until desired color is reached.

Add in cereal and stir until evenly coated. The mixture will be very thick, just keep stirring until it is all mixed together.

Butter your hands and press the cereal mixture evenly into your prepared pan.

The final picture shows all of the ingredients mixed together.

Let the treats cool completely.

Once your treats are cooled it is time to drizzle them with white chocolate. You can drizzle the chocolate across the entire pan or cut them and pipe chocolate across each treat individually it is up to you. I like to do them individually because then the chocolate doesn’t crack and they look prettier, but either way works.

If you are cutting them first you can remove them from the pan and then cut into 16 rectangles.

Place your white chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals stirring between each until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

Place the melted chocolate in a disposable plastic piping bag and cut off the end to create a small opening. Drizzle the chocolate across the crispy treats as much or as little as you’d like. Allow chocolate to harden.

Serve your treats or keep them in an airtight container. Place parchment between layers if you stack them to store.
