If you are looking for a crunchy delicious snack that doesn’t include gluten you can adapt this Chex mix easily! Instead of wheat Chex want to use rice Chex cereal, because it is gluten free, omit the oyster crackers, and use gluten-free pretzels! You can add extra pretzels, Cheerios and peanuts to make up for the oyster crackers, or substitute any small gluten free crackers. There is no need to miss out on this classic snack recipe because of dietary restrictions!
Can I make this Chex mix dairy free?
Yes! You don’t have to use butter for this Chex mix, so if you are dairy intolerant you can still enjoy this tasty snack. Simply swap out the butter for coconut oil or if you still want a buttery sauce you can use a vegan butter. Make sure to check the rest of the ingredients that you purchase to make sure they are also dairy free, occasionally things like pretzels can contain butter.
Other substitutions and additions-
This recipe is close to the original Chex mix recipe and is a buttery savory snack. One of the great things about it is that you can easily add additional ingredients or swap out ingredients to tweak it to your liking. Some of our favorite ingredients to include are bagel chips, goldfish crackers, cheese crackers, pumpkin seeds, rye chips, cashews, pecans, or sunflower seeds. If you are adding ingredients you may need more of the butter mixture to coat them. If you are swapping them out for another ingredient you can usually swap them for the same amounts.
If you like a sweet and savory snack you can add a bit of sweetness to this Chex mix easily! After it cools you can mix in things like M&M’s, chocolate chips, raisins, or other dried fruit! If I’m making a sweet and savory mix I usually omit the chili powder and garlic.

If your air fryer is small you may have to divide this recipe and do it in two batches or toss it more frequently. Your cook time may vary, you can always cook it longer to make it crunchier, so start with a lower time and add more if necessary.
How to store this Chex Mix-
This Chex mix stores well in an airtight container. It is an easy snack that stores well so I like to make 2-3 batches at a time if we’re planning a party or gathering. I usually store it in a zip top bag or a large mixing bowl with a lid on it.
Ingredients for this Easy Air Fryer Chex Mix
- 2 cups Chex cereal
- 1/2 cup Cheerios cereal
- 1 cup pretzels sticks
- 1/2 cup mini pretzels
- 1/2 cup peanuts, roasted and unsalted
- 1 cup oysters crackers
- 1/3 stick of salted butter
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
Here’s How to Make this Chex Mix in the Air Fryer
Place the Chex, Cheerios, pretzels, peanuts, and oyster crackers in a large bowl, and mix well.
In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Then stir in the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, and whisk in the Worcestershire sauce, to the melted butter and stir until it starts to boil. Once boiling, remove from heat and let cool for a couple of minutes.
To microwave- Place the butter, spices and Worcestershire sauce in a microwave safe bowl, lightly cover with a paper towel or parchment paper. Microwave in 30 second increments stirring between each until the mixture begins to boil. Remove from the microwave and set aside.
Pour the sauce over the cereal mixture and stir with a wooden spoon or spatula and gently stir to coat evenly.
Place the mixture in the air fryer basket and cook at 350°f for 4 minutes. Stir or toss the mixture and continue air frying for 4 more minutes.
Allow to cool before serving, store at room temperature in an airtight container.
