I am a lover of snacks and appetizers so I am always looking for delicious easy recipes to add to my low carb snack list! These low carb sausage balls are just as tasty as traditional sausage balls with out the high carb count! They are a great appetizer for any party because everyone loves them whether they are following a low carb diet or not! (In fact my boys like these better than regular sausage balls!)

FAQ & Variations

Can I use pre-shredded cheese?

For best results I like to freshly grate a chunk of cheese because it melts better but if you are pressed for time pre-shredded cheese will do. You’ll want to use about 1 1/2 cups.

What is the best sausage for this recipe?

I personally don’t love a lot of spice so I use breakfast sausage for my low-carb sausage balls. However these are delicious with other sausage too. You can try them with Italian sausage or hot sausage. If you can’t find bulk ground sausage you can use sausage links by cutting them open and taking out the meat. You can even blend more than one kind of sausage if you’d like!

Can I make these ahead of time?

YES! These are a great to make ahead for parties, to have as a quick snack, or even to add to your meal prep. They store well for several days in an airtight container in the fridge! They are great packaged in individual containers for an easy grab and go snack!

Can I use different cheeses?

Absolutely! I love the flavor of a sharp cheddar but you can use your favorite cheese in this recipe. If you want a more mild flavor mild cheddar or Monterey jack are a great option. If you’re looking to add extra flavor you can use pepper jack cheese to add some spice! You can even use a blend of cheeses to create flavor combinations!

Additional variation ideas-

These sausage cheese balls are a great base for trying different flavors! Here are some add ins that you might want to try!

Fresh chives– about a tablespoon of fresh chopped chives adds a delicious fresh flavor to these sausage balls!

Red Pepper Flakes– If you want to add some spice you can sprinkle in some red pepper flakes. About 1/2 a teaspoon is a good place to start, or add more if you really like spicy snacks!

Green onions– Finely chopped green onions make a tasty addition to these little balls! Use 1-2 green onions to add some delicious flavor!

A collage of four pictures showing how to make keto sausage balls. In the first shredded cheddar cheese and cream cheese have been mixed together in a glass mixing bowl with a wooden spoon. In the next picture sausage and an egg have been added to the bowl. In the third picture almond flour, baking soda and garlic powder have been added, and in the final picture the mixture has been scooped out into balls on a parchment lined baking sheet.

Add in sausage and egg and continue mixing until well mixed.

In a separate bowl combine almond flour, baking powder, and onion powder, mix until well mixed.

Mix the almond flour mixture into the sausage mixture until all of the ingredients are well blended. You can do this with a wooden spoon or with your hands, kneading the ingredients together.

Scoop out the mixture in one tablespoon scoops and roll into balls. I like to use a small cookie dough scoop. Place on prepared baking sheet pan 1-2 inches apart.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Serve warm.

Store leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container.
