The hot circulating air creates a delicious crispy outside and gooey, cheesy inside. The result is the perfect grilled cheese to enjoy anytime! What is the best cheese to use?

While this recipe uses cheddar cheese you can really use any types of cheese. You want to use a good melty cheese that will be delicious in your sandwich. You can use mild or sharp cheddar cheese, monterey jack, pepper jack, or American cheese. You can even use a blend of cheeses to create a delicious combination.

What type of bread is best for air fryer grilled cheese?

You can use any sandwich bread you’d like. Some of our favorites are sourdough and Italian bread. You can also use white or wheat bread to create amazing air fried grilled cheese sandwiches.

How to serve this grilled cheese?

This air fried grilled cheese goes well with all of your favorite side dishes. It is delicious dipped in Homemade Tomato Soup or served with chili. It is also tasty with your favorite sides like air fryer french fries, air fryer smashed potatoes, salad or air fried vegetables.

Additions to this air fryer cheese sandwich –

While I love a classic grilled cheese this sandwich is also delicious with some additional toppings. We love to add meat like cooked bacon, pepperoni or ham. Other great additions are avocados or sauteed peppers and onions. You can make all kinds of recipe variations to create a sandwich you love.

Don’t overcrowd your air fryer-

It is important that the hot air in the air fryer has room to circulate so your whole sandwich cooks evenly. So depending on the style of air fryer you have you may have to make these sandwiches one at at time. Your cook time may also vary depending on your air fryer so keep an eye on your sandwiches as they cook.

Can I butter my bread?

You may notice that this grilled cheese recipe uses mayo and mustard instead of butter on the bread. If you are a grilled cheese purist and you like the taste of butter instead you can swap out the mayo mixture for butter. Butter may cook a little faster in the air fryer so be sure to keep an eye on your sandwich.

2 tbsp Mayonnaise

2 tsp Dijon mustard

4 Slices Sandwich Bread

4 Cheddar Cheese Slices

Here’s How to Make Grilled Cheese in the Air Fryer

Preheat the air fryer to 380F.

In a small bowl mix together mayonnaise and mustard.

Spread the mayo mixture on one side of a slice of bread. Place the bread in the air fryer basket buttered side down.

Place two slices of cheese on top of the bread slice.

Spread the mayonnaise mixture on another slice of bread and place it on the cheese buttered side up. If you want to secure the sandwich together with a toothpick to make sure the bread doesn’t shift during cooking. Just push a toothpick through the center of the sandwich.

Air fry the grilled cheese for 6 minutes.

Gently flip the sandwich to the other side and fry for another 6 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Repeat with additional bread and cheese to create more sandwiches.

Serve the grilled cheese hot while it remains soft or even stretchy.
