I don’t know about yours but my kiddos love french toast sticks.

And I love how quick and easy they are, open the box, pop them in the microwave and you’re good to go!

Like most things though, I like to try my hand at making my own!

These are great, not overly sweet, and they freeze beautifully! According to the boys they are better than the store-bought ones, I take that as the biggest seal of approval!

A few tips for great french toast sticks-

#1- Stale bread is best. These are great to make with bread that is not so fresh any more, and has dried out. If you want to use fresh bread you can dry it up by leaving it out over night or popping it into the oven! Cut your bread slices into strips and spread them out evenly on a baking sheet, either leave it on the counter overnight or place it in the oven for about 20-30 minutes at 300 degrees. Keep an eye on it you want it dry but not toasted.

#2- You can control the sweetness– I add some cinnamon and sugar to the egg mixture and then sprinkle more cinnamon sugar on before cooking. However the amount you use is completely up to you. You can skip adding the extra cinnamon sugar if you don’t want them to be too sweet.

#3 Use thick cut bread– You can use regular sandwich bread for these, but if you can find a thick cut bread, or if you have fresh baked bread that you can slice thick that works even better!

Here’s what you’ll need to make these french toast sticks

1- Loaf of bread

1  1/2 – Cup Milk (room temperature)

4- Eggs (room temperature)

4- Tbsp. Butter Melted

2- Tbsp. Sugar

1- tsp. Cinnamon

Butter for cooking

Optional –

Additional Cinnamon Sugar for sprinkling – about 1/4 cup.

Maple syrup for dipping

Ingredients for french toast sticks. A loaf of bread, eggs, milk, butter, sugar, and cinnamon

As noted above you want to start with stale bread. Cut your bread slices into 4 pieces and spread them on a baking sheet. You can leave it out on the counter overnight or place it in an oven at 300 degrees for about 30 minutes.

Next in a large bowl beat your eggs well, add in the milk, melted butter, cinnamon, and sugar.

Dip your bread into the egg mixture allowing any excess to drip off.  Sit your dipped bread to the side for about 5 minutes before cooking. I did mine in batches, dipped them, then sat them on a cookie sheet in rows. That way I could just keep dipping and cooking and always have some ready to go.

If you want extra cinnamon sugar you can add it now, sprinkle it across the top. You can also wait until after they are cooked to add extra cinnamon sugar but it doesn’t stick as well.

Heat a small amount of butter in the bottom of a skillet or on a griddle.  Over medium heat cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

If you’re serving them right away a little side of maple syrup for dipping is delicious!

If you want to freeze them line them up on a cooling rack and let them cool completely, then stick them in the freezer. Once they’re frozen you can put them in a zipper freezer bag. To eat just pop them in the microwave for about 1 min ( microwaves vary though so watch the first time!).

Enjoy!!
