Ingredient Checklist –

Find the exact measurements in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Cocoa Krispies– The chocolate version of rice krispies, they add delicious chocolate taste and brown color.

Marshmallows– You can use large marshmallows or mini marshmallows. They only difference is how long they take to melt so if you use small ones watch them carefully while cooking.

Butter– I like to use salted butter for these. You’ll be melting it so it doesn’t have to be softened.

Pretzels– For this recipe you want large thin pretzels. They create the spiders legs so you want to make sure they are long enough.

Candy Eyes– Candy eyes are pretty easy to find at your local craft store, Walmart, or on Amazon.

Brown Gel Food Coloring- This helps enhance the color of the treats. You can omit it but they won’t be as brown.

Here’s how to make these spider treats-

First you’ll want to prepare a flat surface with wax or parchment paper. This is where you’ll assemble the spiders, you want it to be non stick and prepared ahead of time.

In a large pot melt ½ stick butter over medium heat, add in marshmallows and continue heating, stirring frequently until marshmallows are melted.

Now add in a few drops of brown food coloring if a dark brown spider color is desired. Mix it in well and add more if desired. You can also add the food coloring after the cereal but it is easier to stir it into just the marshmallows.

Next turn the heat off and pour the cocoa krispies into the pot. Stir until they are all well coated.

A collage of 4 pots the first has marshmallows in it, the second the marshmallows are melted, the third cocoa krispies have been added. In the fourth the marshmallows and cereal have been stirred together.

Now it is time to form the spiders. It is a good idea to set out your candy eyes, and pretzels ahead of time. That way you can assemble them quickly. The mixture is most pliable when it is warm but it is still pretty easy to work with as it cools. So you’ll want to work quickly but don’t feel the need to rush.

Using a scoop or spoon scoop out about ¼ cup at a time and roll and press into a ball. Set on prepared surface. To keep the mixture from sticking to your hands lightly butter them.

Press 2 eye shaped sprinkles into the front of the ball, if you have trouble getting them to stick you can get a small pinch of the rice krispie mixture and stick to the back then press them into place.

Break the 2 large arched parts off of 2 pretzels to create “legs” use a toothpick or skewer to make holes in the rice krispies ball and gently press the pretzel pieces into the holes.
