Firecracker Popcorn (made with popping candy)

Are you looking for the perfect fun snack for the 4th of July (or any party)? This firecracker popcorn is awesome! Sweet and salty, and with the added pop of popping candy!

Firecracker popcorn

One of our favorite holidays is the 4th of July! My husband loves fireworks, he gets the Phantom fireworks mailer and is like a kid at Christmas! He loves anything that makes loud noises and smells like gun powder!

Every year we have a big get together at our lake cabin, there is food and fun, and of course an amazing fireworks display put on by not only my hubby but all of the other folks in our campground.

Every year he tries to convince me to buy him the giant package that is like $2000 and called “Grounds for Divorce” but I that hasn’t happened yet!

When we get ready to set our fireworks off we load up with chairs and blankets, bug repellent (find my favorite essential oil one here), and of course drinks and snacks.

My boys love popcorn. We go through it like nobody’s business, and it is always a must have for watching a fireworks display… or movie… or tv… or anything really!

This year I decided to dress up the popcorn for the 4th by creating this firecracker popcorn!

It is amazing. I am a sucker for anything sweet and salty and this has a great balance of both. Add to that the fun and tartness of popping candy and you get a crunchy, sweet, salty, popping snack that will be a huge hit at any get together!

I used microwave popcorn for mine, but you could easily use air popped, or traditionally popped popcorn, but if you use plain popcorn you’ll want to add salt to it or to the final product.

ingredients for firecracker popcorn

Here’s what you need for your firecracker popcorn –

16 Cups popped popcorn (2 bags of microwave popcorn)

12oz. Bag White Chocolate Chips

Strawberry Flavored Popping Candy– PopRocks or AfterShocks – approx. 1oz. total candies (3 full packages of pop rocks or 20 of the small AfterShocks packages)

½ Cup Blue Candy Melts

White & Red sprinkles

The first thing you’ll want to do is prepare your work surface by spreading out a large area of wax paper, you’ll be spreading your popcorn out on it.

Now reserve ½ cup of white chocolate chips and place the rest in the bowl of a double boiler. I use a mixing bowl placed over a pan it works really well!

melted white chocolate

Melt over medium/low heat until smooth.

Now place your popcorn in a large bowl and pour your melted white chocolate over the popcorn. Stir until all the popcorn is evenly coated.

Spread the popcorn out evenly on your wax paper. While the white chocolate is still sticky sprinkle on about ½ of your popping candy and some of your red and white sprinkles.

Now melt the reserved white chocolate chips until nice and smooth.

Now using a pastry bag, a plastic baggie with the corner cut off, or a chocolate drizzling tool, or spoon drizzle the melted white chocolate evenly across your popcorn. Sprinkle on a little bit more of your sprinkles and popping candy.

Let all of your candy cool before serving.

Now it’s all done! Serve it immediately or keep in an air tight container, until you are ready to party!

I recommend making this the day you are going to serve it, it is best fresh and nice and crunchy!

What is your favorite snack for watching fireworks??
