FAQ & Tips –

Use gel food coloring-

Part of the appeal of these cookie bars is their bright color. Gel food coloring achieves nice bright color without having to use a ton of coloring. It keeps your cookies from getting a bitter taste from too much coloring.

Can I use store bought frosting?

Yes! I personally LOVE homemade frosting, but if you prefer store bought or are in a time crunch you can absolutely use it!

How to store these Halloween cookie bars-

These keep well in an airtight container. I like to store them in a single layer but if you are going to stack them place a layer of parchment or wax paper between the layers to the frosting doesn’t stick.

Here’s how to make these cookie bars-

First preheat your oven to 350 and line a square 8×8 baking pan with parchment and lightly butter.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or in a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add in the egg and vanilla extract, continue mixing until well incorporated.

In a separate bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt, whisk to combine well.

Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients mixing between each addition until all the flour mixture is well incorporated.

Next divide the dough in half and place on a clean work surface or piece of parchment paper.

Add yellow food coloring to one half of the dough and knead until the color is even throughout.

Repeat with the other half of the dough and orange food coloring. I used about 1/4 tsp of gel food coloring for each color.

Press the yellow dough into the bottom of your prepared pan.

Place the orange dough on a piece of parchment or wax paper and roll or press it out into an 8×8 square. Carefully place it on top of the yellow dough in the pan and gently press it into place getting it as close to the edges as possible.
