FAQ & Tips for Making the Best Frozen Onion Rings in the Air Fryer

Do I need to use cooking spray?

No, if you prefer to skip the cooking spray or don’t have any you don’t have to use it. Misting the onion rings with oil helps to create crispier onion rings. Without the oil they might not be quite as crispy but will still be delicious. I personally like to use avocado or olive oil on my air fried frozen onion rings for the best taste and perfectly crispy onion rings.

What brand of frozen onion rings is best?

There are a lot of frozen onion ring brands out there so you might be wondering which one is best. It really is a matter of taste. Nathan’s frozen onion rings are battered if you prefer a thicker coating. Alexia frozen onion rings are made with panko bread crumbs so they tend to be crisper with a thinner coating. We’ve made several store brands as well and they all turn out beautifully. You can use your favorite brand of onion rings to make this recipe. Depending on the thickness and style of the breading you may need to cook them a bit longer.

Do they have to be in a single layer?

Yes, if you want crispy onion rings you don’t want them stacked on top of each other. Try to place the onion rings inside the bottom of the basket in a single layer. It is ok if there is a little bit of overlap but you want them to have plenty of surface area so they cook evenly. When you toss or flip them make sure to rearrange the onion rings so they cook evenly. Smaller air fryers may require you to cook the onion rings in batches so that they can get crispy and delicious! If you need to cook in batches you can place the cooked onion rings in a warm oven to keep them warm before serving.

How to store and reheat air fryer frozen onion rings –

You can store your leftover onion rings refrigerated in an airtight container. If you want your onion rings to stay crispy reheat them in the air fryer. To reheat onion rings just preheat the air fryer to 350 and place them back in the air fryer basket for about 5 minutes.
