Keep your pet's feeding area neat and clean with this easy to make mat! Non-slip and easy to clean

My cat’s food bowl is in our kitchen.  It is a logical place to keep it we even have a space behind a curtain under the sink to keep it nicely tucked away. It works really well except for two things. Number one the dog can get to it and every time she’s alone for the day she scarfs all the kitty food down as fast as she can. Number two, our bedroom is down a very short hall from the kitchen and our big kitty always gets the hankering for a snack around 3am. His crunching can disturb sleep with the best of them.

So I’ve decided to relocate the kitty food. It’s part of a bigger pet food organization project (stay tuned for the big part next week). I knew that in their new spot I’d need a mat so to keep the area clean. Something that was easy to wipe off and that wouldn’t scoot around. I couldn’t find anything that would work so, of course, I decided to make one!

It is a pretty simple project, one that you can whip up in no time, and you probably have the supplies around the house. You can customize the size depending on the size of your pet bowls. Have a big dog? Make a big mat! Tiny kitty bowl? Make it smaller. Whatever you need you can make this work!

You can also use any tablecloth you’d like! Make it match your decor perfectly! Or use an old tablecloth and give it new life!

Here’s what you’ll need for this DIY non-slip pet food mat –

A piece of cardboard cut to the size you want.

A vinyl tablecloth (not the thin party kind, the kind with a felt backing)

Non-Slip drawer liner (I used this kind)

Scissors

Hot glue gun

First lay your cardboard out on the table cloth you’ll be cutting around it leaving about a 2 inch overhang all around.

Trim around the edge leaving about 2 inches all around. Center your cardboard in the middle of your piece of tablecloth.

Now using your hot glue gun glue down the corners of the tablecloth.

Just a little dot of glue.

Then gently push it down- being careful the glue is hot!

Repeat with all 4 corners.

Now we’re going to glue the sides. Start with one side. Just put a squiggle of glue along the length and then press it down. Repeat with the opposite side pulling it tight before gluing. Now do the same thing with the ends.

Add a drip of glue anywhere you have a loose piece that needs held down.

Now lay your non-slip liner on the back and cut it to the size of your mat. Leave just a tiny edge of the mat sticking out around it, so the backing doesn’t show from the top.

Now make a nice big squiggle of hot glue and gently press your backing into it… be very cautious here. The glue will come through this really easily so try and press where there isn’t any glue or wait for a few seconds until it is cool enough to still be warm but not burn you!!!

Once you’ve got your backing in place you’re all set! It’s ready to use!
