Ingredient Notes for Cowboy Butter Chicken Pasta

Here’s what you’ll need for this delicious pasta dish. We’ve included tips and substitutions so you can make it as tasty as possible!

  • Rotini Pasta – I like to use rotini for this dish because it holds the sauce beautifully. You can use any variety of pasta you’d like. You can use any shape or you can use speciality pastas like gluten free pasta, lentil pasta etc.
  • Chicken Tenderloins– Chicken tenderloins are super easy to chop up and use in this dish. They have a great texture and cook quickly. You can swap them out for boneless skinless chicken breasts or boneless skinless chicken thighs if you prefer. For a shortcut you can even use precooked chicken or a rotisserie chicken.
  • Butter– You can use salted or unsalted butter, whichever you prefer. Taste your sauce at the end of cooking and adjust the salt as needed.
  • Minced Garlic- I like to use jarred minced garlic because it is so easy. If you prefer freshly minced garlic you can absolutely use that!
  • Worcestershire sauce– This adds great flavor to the sauce.
  • Honey Dijon Mustard– This adds a little bit of sweetness and a little bit of spice to the sauce. If you prefer plain Dijon mustard you can use it or for a stronger mustard taste you can use ground mustard.
  • Smoked Paprika – I love the smoky spiciness that smoked paprika adds. If you prefer plain paprika you can use it instead.
  • Cayenne Pepper– This adds a bit of heat to the sauce. If you don’t love spice you can leave it out or use less.
  • Dried Parsley– Parsley adds a fresh taste to the sauce. You can use fresh if you prefer and you can use a little extra to garnish the final dish.
  • Red Pepper Flakes– These add some heat to the sauce too. You can use less if you prefer less spice or more if you like it spicier! You can also add a sprinkle to the final dish for a garnish and a little extra spice.
  • Diced Onions– I like to finely dice my onions for this recipe so they blend into the sauce well. If you prefer bigger pieces of onion you can cut them into larger pieces. Yellow onion, white onion, or Vidalia onions all work well in this recipe.
  • Lemon Juice– Lemon juice balances out the richness of the butter beautifully. I like to use fresh lemon juice but bottled works just fine too!
  • Heavy Cream– This is what makes the sauce nice and creamy! If you prefer a lower fat option you can use half and half, just be aware that the sauce will be thinner and not as rich.
