FAQ & Tips

What to serve with beef and broccoli?

The classic side for this recipe is definitely rice! The beef, broccoli and sauce top a bowl of rice beautifully. You can use your favorite rice with this recipe white rice, brown rice, jasmine rice.. really any rice will work. To make this a low carb meal you can serve it up with cauliflower rice! You can also serve it with noodles for a lo mein like dish or over cooked quinoa!

How to get the perfect beef-

Since we’re using flank steak in this recipe it is important that it is prepared correctly so it isn’t chewy. The first step is to slice the beef correctly. You want to cut it against the grain in slices that are nice and thin (about 1/4-1/2 inch in thickness) This is a great article about how and why to cut against the grain. The next step is to marinade the beef. I personally like to marinade it for about 8 hours. I like to put the meat in the marinade in the morning so it is ready to whip up for dinner. However this dish will still be tasty if you only have 30 minutes to marinade! Just make sure to set aside enough time to marinade first! For the best marinade results combine steak and marinade in a shallow dish, or zip top bag so all the meat is well covered.

For softer broccoli-

The way this meal is prepared yields a crisp-tender broccoli that still has a bit of crunch. If you prefer a softer broccoli you can quickly microwave or blanch the broccoli for 2-3 minutes before placing it on the baking dish.

Additional toppings –

If you want to add a little something extra to your beef and broccoli dinner you can add a few tasty toppings! For a little heat you can sprinkle on some red pepper flakes or drizzle a little siracha sauce across the top. For a fresh flavor I love to slice green onions and sprinkle across the top!

Here’s how to make this easy beef and broccoli

The first step to making this dish is to marinade the beef. I like to marinade mine in a shallow baking dish or airtight container so that all of the meat gets marinated evenly.

The first thing to do is mix up the marinade. Place 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup sesame oil, and 1/2 tsp baking soda in a large bowl.

Slice the beef against the grain in 1/4-1/2 inch slices. Place steak in a dish, or bowl and cover with the marinade.

Cover and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

A collage of four pictures showing how to make sheet pan beef and broccoli. In the first flank steak has been sliced thinly. In the second sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and ginger have been placed in a small white bowl, in the third they have been whisked together. In the final picture the sliced beef and broccoli florets have been spread in a single layer on a baking sheet.

When ready to cook heat oven to 450.

Whisk together the sauce ingredients in a medium bowl, 2 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 1 tsp fresh minced garlic, 1 tsp fresh ginger, and 2 tablespoons corn starch, mix well until everything is well incorporated.

Remove the meat from the marinade and spread evenly across a baking sheet. Spread the broccoli evenly out among the meat.

Pour the sauce mixture evenly across the meat and broccoli. Gently stir to help spread the sauce evenly across everything. I like to use tongs to gently stir and spread everything into an even layer.

Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Serve warm sprinkled with sesame seeds if desired.

Store any leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container.
