FAQ & Tips for This Homemade Fajita Seasoning Recipe

How to use fajita seasoning-

This homemade seasoning mix can be used in any recipe where you would use a store-bought spice blend. You can use this as fajita seasoning or taco seasoning. I like to use 2 tablespoons for each pound of meat but if you like a more mild flavor you can start with one tablespoon and add more until you get the flavor you want.

You can use this recipe as a seasoning or you can make homemade marinade. You can also mix 2 tablespoons of fajita seasoning with 1/4 cup olive oil, water and fresh lime juice to create a delicious fajita marinade. This will work well for 2 pounds of protein, just mix it all in an airtight container and marinade for at least an hour to 24 hours before cooking.

How to store homemade fajita seasoning-

I like to make this recipe in large batches so I have it on hand for whipping up dinner in no time. It stores well in an airtight container for several weeks. If I make a large batch I store it in a mason jar. You can also store it in a clean and dry empty spice jar so it is easy to sprinkle on your food.

Additions to this fajita spice mix-

One of my favorite things about this spice mix is that it can be tweaked to your family’s tastes. If you like a little more spice you can add 1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. You can also feel free to add a little more of any spice you love. (Our family loves garlic so I often add a bit more).

What meat makes the best fajitas?

Classic fajitas or fajita bowls are one of my go-to busy weeknight dinners and one of the reasons I love them is that you can use pretty much any protein. I like to use chicken thighs because they stay tender and juicy. Chicken breasts or chicken tenderloins are another great option because they have a more mild taste so the flavor really shines through. If you want to make beef fajitas I like to use skirt steak or flank steak. They are best marinated and cut against the grain. Fish and shrimp fajitas are also great. I like to use large fresh shrimp or a mild white fish like cod or haddock.
