When I first got an air fryer it took me awhile to really get into cooking with it, at first I honestly didn’t get the hype (of course now I use it all the time!) But one of the things that I loved cooking with it right away was frozen potato products. We fell in love with tater tots and French fries cooked in the air fryer and so I decided it would be a great idea to try frozen hash browns in the air fryer.

Let me tell you, they did not disappoint! It took a little bit of trial and error to perfect them but now it is my family’s favorite way to make hash browns!

The air fryer makes them nice and crispy without having to babysit them, heat up the kitchen with the oven or use a ton of oil. These easy air fryer hash browns will be your new go-to side dish recipe for breakfast and brunch!

Different Styles of Hashbrowns-

There are several different styles of hash browns and the air fryer is an easy way to cook them directly from frozen. I personally love breakfast potatoes in any style but if you’re wondering what the difference is between them here they are-

Hash brown Patties– When I think of crispy and delicious hashbrown patties I think of McDonald’s breakfast. These are great because you can hold them while you eat them, kids love them, and they are great if you need to eat on the go.

Diced or Country Style Hash browns- These little crispy cubes of potatoes are a classic that everyone loves. They are also called southern style, and if peppers and onions are added they are called potatoes O’Brien. These are great because they get nice and crispy on the outside and stay a little soft on the inside for a great texture.

Shredded Hashbrowns– Shredded frozen hashbrowns are something that I tried for a long time to cook well and I had trouble. Cooking them in the air fryer eliminates those problems! There is a bit of a difference in how they cook in the air fryer vs a pan. With the air fryer each little piece gets crispy instead of them forming a larger crispy patty.

FAQ & Tips Cooking Hash Browns in an Air Fryer

Don’t crowd the air fryer-

It is important when you’re cooking with the air fryer that you leave enough room around your food for the hot air to circulate. If you’re making frozen hash brown patties you want to be sure to place them in a single layer with space between them. With diced or shredded style they can be touching and overlapping but you want a thin layer so that there is still some space.

Cook time may vary-

When you make hashbrowns in the air fryer your cooking time may vary. The cook time depends on what kind of air fryer you have, how many hash browns you’ve put in the basket and how crispy you want your hash browns to be. It is important to keep an eye on them as they cook so you get the crispiest hash browns without over cooking. If you like your them a little softer you can lower the cooking time to get delicious hash browns you’ll love!

How to season hash browns-

We love hash browns seasoned with classic salt and pepper but you can also add additional seasonings for more flavor. Blends like seasoned salt or Old Bay are a great option. I also like to season hash browns with a little of my favorite seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder and smoked paprika. We also like to add cheese on top of the hash browns in the last few minutes of cooking.

How to store & reheat air fryer hash browns-

Store leftover hash browns refrigerated in an air tight container. To reheat hash browns you can place them back into the air fryer and heat them at 350 for about 5 minutes or until heated through.

What to serve with hash browns-

Hash browns go so well with all the classic breakfast foods such as bacon, eggs, sausage and fresh fruit. We love them for a breakfast or brunch alongside breakfast casseroles and coffee cake.

Ingredients for Crispy Air Fryer Hash Browns

With this recipe you can make one serving of hash browns or several so there is no exact measurements for the hash browns, just don’t over crowd the air fryer.

Frozen Hash Browns– You can use hash brown patties, shredded or country style for this recipe. If you’re cooking them for the first time the patty style ones are the easiest, then the country style, and then the shredded.

Oil or Cooking Spray– to get nice crispy hash browns you need a little bit of oil. You can use your favorite oil like olive or avocado in an oil sprayer, or use cooking spray. If you use cooking spray try to find one that has simple ingredients like avocado oil or olive oil instead of a non-stick cooking spray. The simple oils will have a better flavor in your finished product. For extra crispy hash browns add a little more oil.

Olive or Avocado Oil– For diced hash browns you’ll need a little bit of your favorite cooking oil to toss them in before cooking.

Seasonings– Whether you prefer simple salted hashbrowns or want to add a little more flavor you can use your favorite seasonings.
