Up-Cycled Sweater Stockings- 12 Days of Handmade Christmas

sweater-stocking

These up-cycled sweater stockings are a great way to reuse a sweater and make into a beautiful decoration or gift!!

“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.”

I love stockings, and what better to give as a gift then a beautiful stocking, full of fun presents!?

This project takes an unused sweater, (do you have the body left from making my neckwarmer?) and turns it into something new and beautiful.

This project is fairly easy and can be put together for next to nothing, especially if you have a sweater lying around in a goodwill donation bag. I happened to have a few!

All you really need for this project is a sweater and a sewing machine. I wouldn’t really recommend hand sewing these, I don’t think it would hold well enough. Plus you’re going to be sewing before you cut to prevent fraying which is a little difficult to do by hand.

First lay out your sweater

Now turn it inside out. You’ll be turning it right side out after you sew.

Now decide how big you want your stocking. I used one we already had as a pattern. But you could make small ones for holding small gifts.

Now trace your stocking or pattern. On a darker colored sweater I recommend chalk. I used a washable marker on this one.

Now it’s time to sew.
Here’s a few things to keep in mind. You want to back stitch the beginning and the end. You also have to keep an eye on the foot of your machine, mine snagged a few times in the knit and got stuck. So go slowly especially if your sweater is bulky.

Once you have sewed all the way around the edge. Get out your scissors. You want to cut about 1/2 an inch outside your sewing.

Now turn it right side out.

On this one I left enough to fold it down on the top.

Now if you want to add a hanger to it here’s what to do. Cut out a section of sweater about twice as long and twice as thick as you would like your hanger to be. Sew down the edges to prevent unraveling and then trim them.

Then place it where you want it on your stocking and either run it through your machine again or hand stitch it into place.

And you’re done!

Now you can hang them by the chimney with care, or give them away to friends who will love them!
