This one pan spicy chorizo orzo is a delicious hearty, creamy, flavorful pasta dish that everyone loves! Smoky chorizo compliments the delicious orzo and salty parmesan cheese beautifully. This dish is quick and easy, perfect for busy weeknights!

I first discovered chorizo at our local Mexican restaurant and immediately fell in love with the smoky spicy flavor! I was excited to find it in my local grocery store and start creating recipes with it! This cheesy chorizo orzo dish is one of our favorite ways to enjoy it! The rice shaped pasta and creamy spicy sauce creates a dish that is similar to risotto but is way easier to make!

FAQ & Tips for this Chorizo Orzo Recipe

Can I add vegetables?

Absolutely! You can add your favorite veggies to this delicious dish to create different flavor combinations. We love to add spinach or broccoli or chopped green or red peppers. If you’re adding spinach you can stir it in the last 5 minutes of simmering, it will cook quickly. If you’re adding peppers dice them into small pieces and add them to the pan with the onion so they they cook and soften as the rest of the ingredients cook. To add broccoli chop it into small florets, steam it until it is softened but still firm and add to the orzo and chorizo and cook in the last 5 minutes of cooking.

What to serve with this chorizo orzo-

We love to serve this easy dish with an quick veggie like steamed green beans or broccoli. It also goes really well with a crunchy side salad. Because it has a similar flavor profile to chili you can serve it with your favorite chili side dishes.

Ingredients for One Pan Chorizo Orzo

Olive Oil– I prefer to cook with olive oil but you can use your favorite cooking oil for this recipe.

Chorizo– Spanish chorizo is a delicious spicy sausage that adds delicious flavor to this dish. You can find it at most grocery stores in the section with other sausage or refrigerated ethnic foods.

Onion– I use a small white or yellow onion for this recipe. For sweeter onion flavor you can use a Vidalia onion.

Garlic– I like to use fresh garlic in this recipe but for a short cut you can use minced garlic in a jar.

Orzo Pasta– Orzo is a tasty rice shaped pasta that is easy to cook. Make sure you don’t over cook it, it is best cooked to al dente in this recipe.

Tomatoes– I like to use roma tomatoes for this recipe because they aren’t watery and they don’t have a lot of seeds which makes them perfect for recipes. You can also use any other medium size tomato. You can also use cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes.

Chicken Broth– Chicken broth adds a delicious flavor to this pasta dish. You can use use regular or bone broth. If you prefer a beef flavor you can use beef broth or beef stock.

Parmesan Cheese– I prefer to use shredded parmesan in this recipe because it melts well and results in a nice creamy dish. If you prefer grated parmesan (the kind in the shaker) you can use that too!

Fresh Parsley- Freshly chopped herbs add a delicious brightness to this dish. We like to use parsley but you could also use fresh cilantro or basil.

How to Make this Easy Orzo Recipe

Add the oilve oil and chorizo to a large skillet and cook on medium high heat stirring occasionally.

Once the chorizo starts to brown add the onions and cook about 4-5 minutes or until soft.

Add the orzo, tomatoes and garlic to the pan and stir, cook over medium heat stirring frequently, for another 3-4 minutes or until the garlic becomes fragrant.

Pour in the broth and bring the mixture to a boil, cover and reduce to a simmer.

Let it simmer and cook for about 10 minutes until the orzo is cooked to al dente and the broth has mostly been absorbed.

Remove from the heat and stir in the cheese, season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve warm topped with more shredded parmesan cheese and fresh chopped parsley.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 4 oz Chorizo
  • 1 Small Yellow Onion diced
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 Cup Orzo Pasta
  • 2 Medium Tomatoes chopped
  • 2 1/2 Cups Chicken Broth
  • 2 oz Shredded Parmesan Cheese
  • 1/4 Cup Chopped Fresh Parsley optional

Instructions

  • Add the oilve oil and chorizo to a large skillet and cook on medium high heat stirring occasionally.
