I have always looked forward to the time of year when McDonald’s puts out their Shamrock Shake! My boys have always loved them too so it is a yearly tradition to go get them!

But a few months ago I had to drastically change my diet. I found out in December that I have diabetes, and so cutting out sweets became a necessity! (Which was awfully hard at Christmas time!) I’ve had to cut down on carbs and sugar so all the keto recipes have been very helpful.

Now I’ll note here, I have never been a big fan of artifical sweeteners so I have tried to be mindful of not just replacing my favorite sweets with tons of artificial sweeteners. However, sometimes you just want something that you have always loved and a sugar free version is the perfect way to satisify the craving!

I now there are a lot of Keto or sugar free shamrock shake recipes out there that incorporate healthier ingredients. But frankly I was going for authentic taste, not a green smoothie with mint that wouldn’t quite taste right. So this recipe is as close to the real thing as I could get.

My boys even gave it 2 thumbs up and said it is better than the real thing!

A few things to note before getting started-

  • There are several different kinds of ice cream you can use for this. Rebel is the best for a strict keto diet! I also like Bryers Carb Smart but I know it may not be available in all regions.Halo Top also makes a delicious keto ice cream. The ice cream you use does make a difference in the total carbs.
  • Different ice creams blend differently. The recipe calls for 1/4- 1/2 a cup of milk and that is because with any ice cream that isn’t traditional the way it melts and blends varies. For a thicker shake start with just a splash of milk and add more as needed.
  • I use Fair Life milk for this recipe because it is zero sugar. For another low carb option you can use half and half because it has lower sugar and carbs than regular milk.
  • You can make this recipe with “normal” ingredients. If you are not low carb, or want to make a traditional version for your family just swap the ice cream for regular ice cream and the milk for your favorite milk (I prefer whole) everyone loves this recipe!
  • Regular whipped cream in a can has very few carbs & sugar so that is what I used, but you can make a strictly keto whipped cream very easily! Check out this recipe for the details
