FAQ & Tips for these homemade cream cheese mints
Can I make these in other flavors-
I love the classic minty flavor of these mints especially for the holiday season. However if you want to make them a different flavor it is very easy by just swapping out the extract flavor. You can use almond extract or vanilla extract which are both perfect flavors of any occasion. Lemon extract or orange extract are perfect for spring gatherings. Or get really creative with something like root beer extract! You can even divide your dough before flavoring and create different flavors with one batch.
Can I make them in any color?
Absolutely! The best thing about these amazing little mints is how easy it is to customize them! You can easily make them any color you’d like by using food coloring. I prefer to use gel food coloring instead of liquid food coloring. Gel is more concentrated so you don’t have to use too much so the taste and texture of the dough doesn’t change. Use just a little bit of food coloring for pastel colors or more for richer colors.
How to make these different shapes-
The easiest way to shape these mints is to roll the mixture into little balls and press it with a fork, however there are a few other ways to shape these little treats. If you want round mints with a flat top you can press them flat with the bottom of a glass. You can also use a piping bag fitted with a star tip or a cookie press to make star shaped or other shaped mints. You can also use silicone molds to make these mints in any shape you’d like. Silicone candy molds can be found in all kinds shapes and sizes and are perfect for creating homemade mints for any occasion!
How to store these mints-
Once these old fashioned cream cheese mints are set and the outsides are dry they can be kept in an airtight container. I like to place a piece of wax paper between the layers of mints if I’m stacking them in a container that way they don’t stick or transfer color to one another.
Ingredients for this easy cream cheese mints recipe
8 oz Cream Cheese (softened)
¼ Cup Butter (softened)
2 lbs Powdered Sugar
1-2 tsp Peppermint Extract
½ Cup Powdered Sugar (for dusting)
Green and Red Gel Food Coloring
Here’s how to make these delicious cream cheese mints
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or in a large bowl with an electric mixer combine cream cheese and butter until well blended.
Add in 1 cup of powdered sugar to the cream cheese mixture and continue mixing until well incorporated.
Add in peppermint extract.
Add in remaining powdered sugar gradually, mixing well after each addition. Add more powdered sugar if necessary to reach the desired consistency. It should be about the consistency of play-doh.
Separate the dough into 3 sections and place in separate bowls. (If making multiple colors)
Add green food coloring to one bowl and red to another. (or other colors if desired)
Knead the dough to incorporate the food coloring until the color is even throughout.
Cover the bowls with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and dust with powdered sugar.
Scoop out dough in 1 tablespoon scoops and roll into a ball. Place on the baking sheet. Dip the tines of a fork into the powdered sugar and press into the ball to flatten. It is ok if a little powdered sugar sticks on the top of the mints.
Once all the dough has been rolled into balls and pressed allow the mints to sit out for at least 4 hours at room temperature or until the outside is hardened. If the bottoms are still soft flip the mints over and allow them to sit for additional time.
Store in an airtight container.
