I wear a lot of hats.
Not literally, I actually think I look kind of silly in hats.
But in the figurative way that all moms do, we have so many demands on us, so many things we need to get done during the day, and so many roles we fill for our families.
My normal day starts with my blogger hat on, which switches to mommy and wife, then homeschool mom, taxi driver, event coordinator, back to blogger and business manager, and then finally at the end of the day I attempt to relax.
I don’t know about you, but there are times I find it incredibly difficult to transition from one role to the other.
I think moms often feel that way. If you are working in or outside of the home, transitioning to “mommy mode” can be hard. If you haven’t had a great night’s sleep having the energy to perform at work or be present with your kids is can be a challenge.
This time of year can be particularly difficult. With kids back in school, activities starting back up, adjusting to new teachers and new routines can be overwhelming for everyone, especially moms.
So how can we adjust? How can we switch hats with ease and move throughout days transitioning without stress and without feeling crazy overwhelmed?
It is an important thing to figure out. We often find ourselves feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and stressed without being able to pinpoint why. Many times, it is because we’re balancing all those hats on our head at once. We are thinking about work while trying to spend time with our kids. We are worried about what is for dinner tonight while we’re scheduling dentist appointments. We lay in bed with the weight of the day on our shoulders, thoughts ping-ponging around in our heads and then wake up the next day tired from lack of sleep.
So, what’s a mom to do?
Establishing a rhythm and routine-
One of the best ways to help you move through the day is to establish a routine or rhythm for your family. Because I work from home, and we homeschool, our daily routine is flexible, but it is important that we have a similar rhythm for each day so that even if we’re not doing school work at the exact time each day, my boys know that school starts after they’ve had breakfast. It is about knowing the basic flow of your day so that you can be mindful as you move from one thing to another.
Outline your day–
What does your day look like? Where are the places or times that you need to switch hats? Maybe it is the exact same time every day, you walk through the door from work at 5:25 and the mommy hat needs to go on. Maybe you’re like me and you know that after breakfast it’s time to put on the homeschool mom hat. Take some time to really look at what the flow of your day looks like so that you can see where you need to pause to transition.
Support your transitions-
Since we are human, and not robots, it can be difficult to shut off one part of ourselves to turn on another. Making the switch from mommy to wife after the kids are in bed, or from focused and working to fun and relaxed, can be a challenge. Once you’ve figured out when you switch hats you need to give yourself a hand in making those transitions easier. One thing that is hugely helpful is giving yourself a few breaths, a few moments, to move from one role to another. When you pull in the driveway after work, a pause to let your brain and body know that you are shifting roles can make a huge difference.
To take this idea one step further and really support those transitions you can incorporate aromatherapy.
I am an avid user of essential oils. I think taking pause and breathing is so beneficial in all the areas of your life and supporting how you want to feel with aromatherapy makes it even more effective. Scent is a powerful mental trigger to help you achieve your desired mindset and the right blends can make all the difference. When you combine a pause, with a deep breath of a supportive essential oil blend, you are ready to move into the next portion of your day with ease.
Don’t worry I’m not going to add learning about aromatherapy and mixing essential oils to your already long to-do list!
Easy Aromatherapy–
Let’s face it, a bunch of little essential oil bottles aren’t exactly portable. Finding the time to learn what blends will work for you is time-consuming. That is why I reach for the beautifully crafted balms from Scentered. They have created 100% natural aromatherapy balms and candles that are formulated to support your daily wellbeing rituals and help you transition through your routine.
The balms are perfect for keeping in your purse or laptop bag, on your nightstand or desk, to grab and use as needed throughout your day. They even have a “Wellbeing Ritual Aromatherapy Mini Tin” that has 5 different balms in a beautiful tin that can go with you wherever you want!
If you want to use aromatherapy to create a well-being ritual in your home, it is as easy as lighting a candle. Light a “Happy” candle to uplift the mood, or “Escape” for settling down in the evening.
Using aromatherapy to help you create a wonderful rhythm to your day doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, it is so simple to choose a Scentered balm, inhale deeply, apply it to your pulse points (wrists, temples, and neck) and feel your mental state shift to where you want it to be.

Putting it all together–
So how do these ideas all work together? Let me give you a glimpse of what my day looks like, and how I use Scentered to support my routine throughout the day.
Like most people, I get up in the morning and have my coffee. Then I head to my yoga mat, I love starting my day with some gentle yoga to get my blood flowing. Before I start, I grab my “Be Happy” balm and dab on my wrists, temples, and neck. The uplifting scent helps me feel energized, relaxed, and ready to start my yoga practice.
Then I get dressed and it’s time to spend some time working here on the blog. My house is kind of crazy with 3 boys, 2 dogs and 3 cats around all the time. So, I grab my “Focus” balm to help me get my work done without being too distracted.
Next, it’s time to get some schoolwork done. What balm helps when I’m in teacher mode? Well, that depends! If I’m helping my 17-year-old with geometry it is “De-Stress” to the rescue! My boys share my love of aromatherapy so I’m happy to hand them the “Focus” balm to help them concentrate on their work!
Our afternoons can be full of many things, sometimes it is getting housework done, running errands, field trips or outings with friends, or sports and activities. I often reach for the uplifting scent of “Be Happy” again to boost my energy and mood, “Focus” if I’m working more… whatever the afternoon requires I pick the best balm!
At the end of the day once dinner is served, the dishes are done, and I’m ready to relax for the evening and read, watch tv, or play video games with my youngest, I reach for “Escape” it helps me relax, shut off my brain with all of the thoughts from the day and be present in the time I have to unwind and spend with my family.
Before I head to bed I love to light my “Sleep-Well” candle in my room, or maybe “Love” if the mood is right *wink wink*.
The beauty of Scentered’s products is that you can incorporate them seamlessly in your day, with the same ease that you refresh your lipstick, you can refresh your mind, change your mood, and support your wellness to switch hats and feel your best!
So as you adjust to this school year and all that it brings, as life changes, children grow, and you enter new seasons, I encourage you to support your wellbeing with routines, and intentional pauses to help you feel more at ease!
