I am not a fan of chemicals. I don’t like them in my personal products, my cleaners, or my food. I don’t like what they do to our bodies, our air, or our environment. They are yucky!!!
However, there are 5 people in our house, 4 of them male, and I also am not a fan of my bathroom smelling like a frat house.
What’s a girl to do?
Over the past few years I’ve been on a mission to learn to make my own household cleaners. I’ve made spray cleaners, carpet refresher, even wax melts for my tart burner, all chemical free and all natural. It makes me feel great to control at least a little bit of the chemicals coming into our lives every day.
With things like these little fizzy toilet bombs I not only feel great about keeping chemicals out of my home but I also know I’m not putting even more of them into our drinking water, good for my people and the environment is a total win in my book.
Oh and they work, really well! They’ve got the power of essential oils, and the fizzy action! Let me tell you, I’m not going to waste my time making and using cleaners that don’t get the job done, Ain’t nobody got time for that!
Another change we’ve made in the bathroom that makes me feel really great is switching to Scott Tube Free toilet paper. I found it at my local Rite Aid and was intrigued.
My first thought was why would you need tube free tp. Then I thought about how many toilet paper rolls my family of 5 pitches every week… it’s a lot! I learned later that over 17 billion tp rolls get thrown out annually!! That is a ton of waste!! So we made the switch, and love it! I know people can be picky about their toilet paper, I mean we use it multiple times a day, and this is one I recommend, it’s soft, strong, everything you want in your TP. And being Tube Free, no one can leave an empty roll!! Our bathroom trash doesn’t get full nearly as fast!
Maybe I’m weird but making small changes like cleaners I use, and no toilet paper rolls to toss out makes me feel good! So ditch the toilet paper tube and try these toilet bombs, then your bathroom will make you feel happy too!
To make your own little fizzy toilet bombs here’s what you’ll need-
1/2 Cup Baking Soda
1/4 Cup Citric Acid (you can find this in the canning section of your local grocery store)
1/4 Cup Corn Starch
1-2 Tbsp. Water
Lemon essential oil
Tea Tree essential oil
(Here is my favorite places to get affordable essential oils!)
Silicone muffin wrappers or other silicone mold
I picked lemon and tea tree for these fizzy toilet bombs because of their properties. Both of them are known to kill germs and bacteria, and they both do a great job eliminating any yucky odors! I’m not a fan of the smell of tea tree by itself, but mixed with the lemon they leave a nice fresh scent! If you have other oils you’d rather use by all means use your favorites!
The first thing you’ll want to do is mix your baking soda, citric acid, and corn starch in a bowl. Then drop in 15 drops of lemon and 20 drops of tea tree essential oils. Mix it all up until everything is well blended.
Now this part is important. You have to mix your water in very slowly or the whole thing can become a bubbly ruined mess. You want to make a little well in the middle of your dry ingredients and add in about a teaspoon of water. There will be a little fizzing, that is the baking soda and citric acid reacting to each other. So just a little at a time and then stir quickly.
Keep making a little well then adding a little more water until you’ve added about a tbsp. Now pick up a little and pinch it in your fingers to see if it holds together. If it does it’s ready to go, if not keep adding water a little at a time until it does.
Once you’ve reached that stage it’s time to fill your molds. I highly recommend silicone muffin liners because they peel off really easily, I tried once making these in an ice cube tray and ended up with a mess trying to get them out. If you have other silicone molds for soaps or lotion bars they should work too!
Fill your muffin wrapper about 1/3 of the way pressing the mixture firmly into the bottom of it. These will grow a lot so make sure to leave plenty of room!
Now leave them sit overnight to get nice and dry. When they are dried completely you can just peel the muffin wrapper off! You want to store them in an air tight container so no moisture can get to them and the essential oils don’t evaporate out.
I like to toss one of these in the toilet let it do its fizzy thing then give it a quick swish with the brush, all done for the day! Gets the job done and you can feel great about using them!
What small changes have you made to help your family and the environment? Have you ever tried Scott Tube Free??

Are these safe for septic systems?
Krista says
Well… I honestly don’t know?? I would think so, there is citric acid in a lot of things like dishwasher detergent, even kool-aid, and I think baking soda is septic safe! I’d check with someone who knows more than I do to be on the safe side though!

Hello,
Thanks for the lovely idea. I made some myself but they did not work. Is it just because the water in my toilet is grey water?
if so, what else can I use?
