I know a lot of homeschoolers who struggle to incorporate the arts into their lessons. Let’s face it we’re not all artists or musicians and sometimes the idea of teaching our kids these subjects leaves us feeling lacking. I recently had the opportunity to check out Zeezok Publishing’s Music Appreciation Set and I am so excited to tell you about it! If you’re looking for an easy way to incorporate music into your homeschool you’ll want to read on!!
A music appreciation curriculum for anyone.
My musical expertise includes middle school level clarinet playing… which is fuzzy to say the least. However I love music, of all types, everything from Opera to rock and all that could lie in between. I also know how important music education is for kids! I’ve also learned how much can be taught through classical music, how much history, science and more is associated with classic composers and their time periods.
But I never knew where to start. Or if I’d have enough musical knowledge to help my kids learn.
Well the folks at Zeezok are kind enough to call their curriculum Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades, instead of “Teaching Music Appreciation for Dummies.”
You see this set is for anyone, including those of us with very little musical knowledge and very little knowledge of classic composers.
The set includes easy to read biographies of each composer, and a cd of music to help in studying them. The set we received is for Elementary grades but my 7th grader enjoyed it just as much as my 2nd grader. It’s an awesome resource for parents with kids in multiple grades, there is something for everyone at every level!
I can’t say enough about the quality of this set. I was so excited to get the box and see each individual biography, the workbook, and the cd’s. Many music curriculum I’ve seen are a little watered down, and not very in-depth. This set covers so much, and is so full of information and resources it is well worth the investment!!
An easy and interactive learning experience
One of the things I love about this set is how easy it is to use and how there are a lot of different activities to help really learn about the composers, their lives and time periods.
Each composer study is broken down into weekly lessons. It makes it simple to have a weekly or daily music lesson and really immerse the kids in learning about the composers.
The lesson book has great comprehension questions, interesting facts, and a variety of activities.
The set also includes a lap book cd.
Now this may get my official homeschool mom card revoked but we have never made lap books… (Thankfully there are great instructions on the cd!)
I know a lot of people who use them but they’re not something I ever tried with the boys. Well now I have and I see why people like them so much!
The different lap book elements included are fun and interactive, games, little flip books, cut out cards and more make reviewing facts fun… in fact the kids didn’t even realize that they were! The cutting, pasting and folding practice for little hands is another plus too!
The different activities are another aspect that I loved, Nathan could take the more challenging activities and Daniel could do the easier ones. These are great lessons to work with all your kids together!
Music study and so much more
I have mentioned time and time again how much I love lessons that incorporate multiple subjects.
These Zeezok lessons do that beautifully… I mean beautifully.
In the first lesson on Bach we learned about oxidation, and the Voyager space craft. We learned about the Baroque period architecture and art. We learned about different stringed instruments and even had a map skills activity!! Hello science, history, art, music and geography all rolled into one! We even baked up some German Rye Bread as part of our study!
Having fun and working with the variety of activities was so much fun!
Not only does it help with learning so many subjects but it is also great reinforcement in remembering a lot about the composers and their music. The Bach lapbook even includes a game that is as educational as it is fun. Daniel even said, “Can we play this sometime when it’s not school time?” Now that’s a winner!
