Science has always been a favorite subject in our house. While there are some subjects like writing or history that have my children coming up with creative avoidance techniques science is on that they are always excited about!
Science is also one of my favorite subjects to teach, maybe it’s the willingness of my kiddos or maybe it’s because there is so much we can cover, experiment with, create and discover… it was always one of my favorites in school!
There are not many subjects I can teach an 8th grader and 3rd grader at the same time but science is one of them! It is one subject where I can have them both participate, learn new concepts, and then have them complete work at their grade level. Nathan takes more notes, answers harder questions and does additional research. Daniel does a little less when it comes to the papers, he gets to do a lot of hands on activities and everyone learns together!
When I sat down to plan our lessons for this year I decided to use “The Building Blocks of Science” from Real Science- 4 -Kids. Now I’ve never been on to do anything traditionally, or normally (hence the blog name lol!) and I ended up deciding on their 5th grade curicculm, even though neither of my kids are in that grade!
Here’s what we love about this curriculum!
We love the subjects covered– Chemistry- including atoms, the Periodic table, and chemical reactions. Biology- with cells, bacteria and viruses. Physics- including force, energy, and laws of physics. Geology- Rocks and minerals, Earth’s layers and Earth’s dynamics, and last but certainly not least Astronomy- with sections on the Earth, Moon, Sun and planets!! These subjects are in all their books each focusing on different details and at an appropriate grade level!
There are 22 Science Experiments! – The Laboratory Notebook is essentially a kids workbook. However instead of just run of the mill work sheets and questions each lesson is set up as an experiment! Everything from “what’s in spit” to physics experiments demonstrating laws of motion, there are a ton of hands on activities. There are also lots of questions to answer, places for notes and observations, and charts to record data. Each experiment corresponds to a chapter in the textbook so your kids can read and then reinforce what they’ve read through the experiment!
The textbooks are colorful & fun to read! – My Daniel is a great reader. I had no worries that he’d be able to read a textbook that is a couple grade levels higher. However, he gets bored pretty easily. He likes books with pictures and illustrations ones that are fun and interesting to read. The Real Science- 4- Kids textbook is great! It is full of colorful illustrations, fun little comics, and is written in a conversational but educational way. It is not your typical boring textbook, perfect for keeping science super fun!
The Teacher’s Manual is easy to follow– Each experiment is broken down into sections and each has questions to ask, instructions to follow, and materials needed. It makes it super easy to plan ahead for each lesson and then guide your students through the experiment and get them thinking! Anything that makes my life teaching these boys easier is a win!
There are lots of grade levels to choose from!– You can start with Real Science- 4- Kids in Kindergarten and use it through 6th grade! (Grade 7 will be available in time for the 16-17 school year!) Each grade level is chock full of concepts that build on your child’s understanding of science. The curculim was created by Dr. Keller when she noticed a need for a great science program for homeschooled kids. (Read more about Dr. Keller and the program here) It is well named as it is designed to start exposing kids to the building blocks of science from the beginning of their schooling!
They reward their customers! – I know as a homeschool mom that when I find something I love I tell all my friends about it! Well Real Science-4-Kids offers a great referral program! You tell your friends about how much you love this science curicculm and then they order and give them your link. You get $20 and they get 30% off their order!!
Want to get 30% off your order? Use my link then share yours with friends!
