Looking for some fun to pass the cold winter days? Here are 10 awesome indoor activities for families!
I don’t know about you but once the holidays are over the winter seems to stretch on and on and on with nothing really fun to break it up. It’s cold, the days are grey, and when it’s not too cold the snow is melting and it’s super muddy outside.
It gets hard not to just sit at home and hibernate, and after awhile everyone goes a little stir crazy! It’s fun to plan something outside the house, to burn off some energy and get your blood flowing! My kids have a big age range so I am always looking for family friendly outings! Something that parents enjoy and kids love! As the winter drags on and on its time to head out to one of our favorite indoor activities for families!
Here are my top 10 indoor activities for families!
Trampoline Park- We have a trampoline in our back yard, but it’s not very fun when its covered in snow or its 10 degrees out. So the trampoline park is a great way to get bouncing, burn a ton of energy and have a great time! Sometimes it’s a bit of a drive to find one close to you but it’s well worth it! You can often find discount prices on sites like Groupon to save some $$ when you go!
Bounce Around– Another great option for bouncing is an indoor bounce around! Most have great inflatable slides, bounces, even obstacle courses that let kids run, bounce, and flop around til their hearts content!
Slide Park- If you’re lucky enough to live in the Pittsburgh area you can visit a one of a kind carpet skate park! Fun Slides Carpet Skatepark is a huge facility with ramps, jumps and more. You strap slides onto your feet and skate away!
It’s super fun, think sliding across a hard floor in socks, but better! Fun slides has a bounce area and a “super ninja challenge course”!
Bowling– If you’re looking for a little friendly family competition bowling is a great way to spend an afternoon! It’s super affordable, and if you have little ones you can request bumpers so that they can have a great time and do really well! We always like to go to an alley that has pizza so that it becomes dinner and an activity all in one!
Roller skating- Roller skating is such a classic! There is nothing that will make you feel like a kid again as much as lacing up a pair of tan roller rink roller skates with orange wheels! So many skate rinks now also include arcades, indoor jungle gyms, and other activities that even if not everyone wants to skate your whole family will have fun!
Ice Skating- Another classic! This one seems a little counter intuitive if you’re trying to get out of the cold, but it’s so much fun! Whether you have an indoor rink or outdoor rink close to you ice skating is such a fun
Indoor Pool– One of the most affordable activities is spending an afternoon at an indoor pool! Check your local YMCA or gym, most offer really nice indoor pool facilites that are included in membership, or you can purchase a day pass. Check out Y’s in larger cities and their pools may include water slides and fun water features! It’s like a day at the water park for a fraction of the cost!
Laser Tag – If you have kids that love video games then laser tag will be right up their alley! Ducking around corners, fun sound effects, and friendly competition makes laser tag fun for the whole family. I am personally a super lousy laser tag player, I die a lot, but its crazy fun! If you can’t find a stand alone laser tag check at local trampoline parks or family fun centers, often you can purchase laser tag admission separately.
Movies- Ok, so this one doesn’t really burn off energy, but you do get to get out of the house, enjoy time together and eat lots of popcorn, so it’s a win in my book! Movies are a great way to spend an afternoon or evening! Check your local theaters for second run movies, discount days, or matinee discounts to save serious money on admission!
Museums or Science Centers– A local museum may not seem like a lot of activity, but walking around, checking out exhibits, and hand on activities make for a pretty active day! Pick a museum that aligns with the interest of your family, are you history buffs? Maybe you love art? Is there a future astronaut in your midst? Many museums do free days throughout the year of offer discounts certain days. Plan ahead and visit one your family will love!
So there you have it 10 super awesome indoor activities for families! Hopefully this list will give you some great ideas to get out and beat those winter blues!
What is your family’s favorite indoor activity? I’d love to hear your suggestions!
