How to Make a Sleeping Bag for Stuffed Animals

Meet Monty and Dewdrop, two of Daniel’s very best friends.

They go everywhere with us, and each and every night they sleep with him.

On Christmas Eve a new friend was added to the mix. A fun little guy who came courtesy of Gernie (my Mom) his name… be prepared for the originality is…Sock Monkey.

These guys are small. He is not a full sized sock monkey, he’s Beanie Baby size. (remember them, they were going to be worth something someday…)
These three friends while soft, cuddly, and fun to have around tend to get themselves lost. Especially at night. They sneak under pillows, in the folds of blankets, and sometimes even off the bed.
This results in panic.
If Daniel wakes up and Monty is missing it is cause for waking up a parent (or 2).
So I decided we needed a solution for these little guys. I was going to put them in in a pillow case but decided that they could use a sleeping bag of their own. Daniel informed me that their favorite colors were purple, green, and blue, so we set out to find a nice soft fabric, thin enough to feel everybody through (for a head count in the middle of the night) in those colors.
Luckily it exists.
We bought half a yard for our little guys. If your toys are bigger you’ll obviously need more, this is a project that requires less measuring and more eyeballing.
Lay out your fabric and put your friends on top.
Now using a piece of chalk mark how wide you want the sleeping bag to be. Leave 1/2 an inch or so extra for seams.
Next you want to fold it in half and lay your little buddies on top again, your judging how deep you want it to be. Leave a flap at the top about 3 inches long. This is what you’ll be using to close the bag when it’s finished.

Now if your fabric has a right side, turn it in. Mine was the same on both sides so it didn’t much matter. Now sew up both sides. Just an easy straight stitch, back stitching to secure it on both ends.

Now turn it right side out, and you should have a lovely little pouch.

I decided to secure the flap with a button. You could use velcro but since I knew this would be getting a ton of use I thought it might tear.

To measure the size for your button hole set your button on the flap and mark the outsides.

Now connect the dots.
I’ll interject here… this will only work if you’re using fleece, if you need to make an actual button hole I’m very sorry I have no idea how to do that.

Cut along your line and voila you have a button hole. (but not a real button hole) Line your button up with it on the pouch and sew it on.

Now tuck your friends in for a nice long nap

When it’s time for bed they can all snuggle in nicely and the button gets closed so no one gets out  until morning.

Good night guys!!

This is such an easy project if you have a beginning sewer, or if you are one! It can be so easily customized and is a great solution for small stuffed animals!
