My two youngest boys choose their clothing based on the availability of pockets.
They need a place for their stuff.
Their weird stuff… like rocks, candy wrappers, small toys… and the more practical stuff like phones.
If they don’t have pockets, they’ll sink to the bottom of the clothes pile only to be worn when they have nothing else clean… which does happen, more often then I’d like to admit.
And sometimes even though they have pockets, they need a little more room. Or sometimes a nice cargo pocket is a great addition to gym shorts or jeans.
Can I say I’m seriously considering making myself one of these? I think it would be great with yoga pants, or anything else without pockets… is it too fanny pack-ish?? I’m debating.
In the meantime though the boys love it. It can hold all the things, and keep them secure. It’s also super easy and a great use for old cargo pants/shorts.
Here’s what you’ll need.
An old pair of cargo pants/shorts
2- Click-y hair clips (I don’t know if these have an actual name)
A needle & thread
Scissors or pinking shears
This is seriously easy.
First take a close look at your pocket. You’ll be cutting around the edges. On mine the front covered the seams so I was able to just cut it and have any rough edges covered. Alternately you could use pinking shears to give it a more finished look and avoid fraying.
Carefully cut around your pocket’s edges, you want to make sure to leave all seams intact so you don’t end up with a pocket that has holes!
Once it’s cut out position your hair clips on the back. They may seem like a strange choice but I looked long and hard for something that would work and ultimately they were the best! They’re easy to sew on and made to grip, and are nice and thin so they don’t add bulk at the waist band.
Now you’ll be sewing them on by hand so get your needle and thread ready.
You want to anchor it on with the skinny middle part. The top first so that it is held in position and then pick a few more places and sew around them. It’s just like sewing on a button, 4-5 stitches in each place anchors it beautifully.
That’s it!! See I said it was easy.
Now your kids (or you!) can clip it on and carry your stuff easily!
