We all know they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day but so often it’s the easiest to skip. One of the best ways to make sure you get something delicious and nutrious in your system is to have it ready to go in the morning!
When you’re thinking easy breakfast options they’re even better when they are full of ingredients that are healthier and give you nutition to fuel your day! I created these breakfast calzones to be delicious, easy but healthier with their whole wheat dough, lots of veggies, egg whites, and an amazing addition of plant based protein with MorningStar Farms® Original Sausage Patties & Bacon Strips!

Here’s what you’ll need- (Makes 16 Calzones)
For the dough-
3- Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1- Cup All Purpose Flour
3- tsp Yeast
1- Cup Warm Milk (regular or almond)
1/4- Cup Sugar
1- tsp Salt
1/2 Cup Butter Softened
** Alternately you can use frozen bread dough thaw and let rise according to package directions.
For the Filling –
Salt & Pepper
8- Egg Whites
1/2 – Green Pepper Finely Chopped
1/2- Red Pepper Finely Chopped
1- Med. Onion Finely Chopped
5- Strips MorningStar Farms® Bacon Strips
1/2- Cup Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
For the dough-
In the bowl of a stand mixer combine your milk, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit about 15 minutes or until foamy.
Now mix in your butter, it will be a little chunky but that’s ok, now mix in your eggs. Now using your dough hook mix in your whole wheat and all purpose flour. Mix until it’s a nice big ball o’ dough.
Once the dough is done you want to cut it into 16 large golf ball size pieces. Roll them into balls and set them aside to rise lightly covered with a dish towel.
If you are using a store bought dough, divide it and let it rise according to package directions.
While your dough is rising pour a little olive oil in a large skillet. Add in your chopped onion and peppers and saute over medium heat until they’re slightly softened.
Now roughly chop your MorningStar Farms sausage patties and bacon strips.
Now add them in with your veggies, and cook until everything is heated through.
In a bowl stir up your egg whites with a little salt and pepper, then pour them over your veggie mixture and cook it all together over medium heat until cooked throughly.
Now its time to assemble your calzones! Get your oven pre-heating to 35o while you put them together.
Roll out your dough into a circle about 6 inches in diameter. Now scoop a little of your egg and veggie mixture onto half of your dough circle, sprinkle a little cheese on top.
Now fold over the dough and press it closed around the edge. Use a fork to crimp the edges to make them nice and secure.
Now pop them in the oven for 12-15 minutes or until slightly golden on top.
You can eat them right away or if you want to wrap them up for later then let them cool completely. You can wrap them individually in plastic wrap and put them in the fridge. To re-heat them wrap them in a paper towel and microwave for about a minute.
Now you’re all set! Healthy breakfast all prepared and ready to go when you do!
