The winter season can be a magical time of year that brings new opportunities to make valuable family memories. The cold breeze and snow covered landscape sometimes keeps us from our normal schedule, but being snowed in can be a wonderful adventure. Here are some ideas for activities to enjoy with family outside in the snow, or to cozy up inside and enjoy relaxing activities!

I don’t know about where you are in the world but where I am the snow has shown up in a big way this winter! We often go years without much of the white stuff, but this year there has been some on the ground almost all winter, with a few storms dumping several inches at once!

We love it!

With the snow comes the opportunity for family fun! Here are some of our favorite activities!

Feed the Birds

We may have the luxury of indoor heating and the local grocery store, but the winter time can be a hard time of year for our backyard wildlife. Whether you want to invest in a bird feeder or just spread bread crumbs around the yard, lots of birds are sure to show interest in a yummy meal. All the range of birds and their colors will show clearly against the white snow. This can be especially fun and educational for young children.

If you want to make a bird feeder check out this one made with a juice or milk carton!

Have a Contest

Nothing like a little competition. The snow can be a great element for it. Split into teams and pick a challenge. See who can make the coolest snowman, build the tallest fort, or make the most snow balls in one minute. It’s also fun to have a sled race. See who can make it to the finish line first or sled the farthest distance.

Enjoy a Snowy Snack!

Cold weather and having fun in the snow can create a big appetite, and cooking together can be a great way to bond with family. For those wanting a chilly treat you can gather some fresh snow from outside, make sure its clean, and make a snow cone.

You can do this by making a snow ball and adding your favorite drink to it. Root beer, lemonade, or apple juice, there are so many possibilities!

We also love to make snow ice cream! I’ve done this since I was little and my boys love it! Here are the instructions and “recipe”

Or if you don’t want to eat snow make a fire and spend some time making roasted marshmallows which could be eaten with or added to a warm cup of hot chocolate.

If you want to get super creative with your hot chocolate these Hot Cocoa Bombs are so much fun!

Make a Photo Album

Get bundled up and head outdoors with the camera in hand. Capture your children making snow angels, the dog enjoy the white yard, and the sled race. Once your fun times are caught on film you can get them printed and add them to a scrap book or make a winter time photo album.

Or break out your old boxes of photos and go through your pictures, let your kids pick out their favorite memories and create an album that will bring them joy each time they look at it!

I am a big believer in slowing down and hibernating a bit during the winter months but they are also a great time to enjoy the snow and make some fun family memories!
