By far one of the toughest subjects to approach as a parent is sex! Let’s face it, we get uncomfortable, our kids get uncomfortable, and no one knows exactly what to say! But sex is one of the most important things we can talk with our kids about. Having accurate information helps keep them safe, and make educated decisions!
There are a lot of important conversations that we need to have with our kids, and most of the super important ones have to be ongoing conversations throughout their lives.
As much as we would love a one and done situation the truth is that those conversations have to grow and develop with our children so that they can continue to understand and be empowered on the level that they are able to understand.
Let’s face it, we don’t want our kids to deal with sexual assault, STI’s, teenage pregnancy, or any other issues that can come along with not being educated about sexual health.
We want to teach them our values around sex, and make sure that they are getting the correct information. And believe it or not, as parents we have the strongest influence on our kids, so communicating those things with them is super important.
So I brought in an expert to help us work through how to approach these conversations, why they are so important, and how at each stage in life we can communicate in a way that educates and empowers our kids.
Miki Johnston is a therapist with 25 years of experience, she has extensive experience working with women, adolescents, and families. She is also the creator of a sexual health curriculum that focus on education, healthy relationships and parent involvement.
So listen in to this week’s episode as we talk about sex (sorry if the Salt n’ Pepa song is in your head now!) and learn how to navigate this touchy subject together!
