Looking for a way to clean your house and leave it smelling terrific? This DIY thieves cleaner is easy to make and great to clean with!

I recently started seeing a new chiropractor, her office is just lovely and always smells really nice. I mentioned it to her on my last visit and asked if there was something specific she used.  I assumed she was burning candles, or diffusing essential oil…something.

Well she wasn’t. She said she gets asked that question all the time, and the reason it smells so good is what she cleans with….

Thieves cleaner. She has a spray bottle she mixes it up in and then goes to town cleaning the tables, door knobs, walls, bathrooms…. everything. Leaving a lovely fragrance behind.

She was kind enough to let me know what she mixes up so I could make some and clean my house with it!

And now, my friends, I am sharing it with you!

I decided not to only make thieves cleaner but to also make carpet freshener too!!

Thieves cleaner

It is so simple, non-toxic, and smells awesome.

Here’s what you’ll need for both thieves cleaner and carpet freshener-

For the Spray cleaner-

1- Cup Vinegar

1- Cup Filtered or Distilled Water

30-35 – Drops Thieves Oil blend – You can find my recipe here, or there are some great blends on Amazon

A spray bottle- You can use any spray bottle, but essential oils are best kept in dark bottles.(Mine is from Amazon)

This is super simple. Add your vinegar, water and oil into your spray bottle. Twist on the lid and give it a good shake. That’s it! Now you are ready to clean! Initially you’ll smell vinegar, don’t worry, that “we just dyed Easter eggs” smell will dissipate pretty quickly and the smell of the oils will be left!

For the Carpet Refresher-

1- Cup Baking Soda

15-20 Drops Thieves Oil blend

A Jar for mixing

This one is even easier. Put about 1/2 of your baking soda in a jar and add in 10 drops of oil, add in the rest of your baking soda, and another 5-10 drops of oil. Give it a stir or shake. I like to let this sit for a few hours before using it so that the oil has a chance to really sink into the baking soda.

To use sprinkle it on the carpet and let sit for 10-15 minutes, then vacuum it up!

Now when people come to your house they’ll ask what smells so good! You can let them in on the secret of the thieves cleaner if  you want!

That’s pretty darn amazing. I wish I had known about this last year when we got our puppy and she kept sneaking into the kids’ carpeted bedroom before she was housebroken.
Is there anything Thieves can’t do?

Lovely idea! I really like to make my own cleaning products and very often mix different ingredients in order to make DIY natural cleaners. I very often use lavender or lemon essential oils and I am very curious to try thieves oil as well! Thanks for sharing the recipe! I’d love to try it out! 🙂

I have never heard of this Thieves Oil blend. What exactly in it? It can steal my carpet stains and keep them forever. Between my dog and small children, I am up to my elbows in carpet stains.

HI, i don’t see where you tell us how to use your carpet cleaner? Are you just spraying it on and vacuming? I can see how this mixture might make your carpets smell great, I LOVE Thieves oil, but don’t understand how it will lift off the dirt.

  25. Krista says

    January 29, 2017 at 2:27 pm

It’s a carpet refresher, not cleaner, just sprinkle it on, let it sit then vacuum. You could probably put the spray cleaner mixture in a rug scrubber though to give your carpets a cleaning!

Hi Krista. I love your carpet cleaning/deodorizing recipe. Do you have to use the oil or can you leave it out. I have dogs and I don’t know how they would react to it. Would plain baking soda be enough to take the odor away?

    Hi, Krista
    That’s a great Idea
    Can I use another oil?
