The school year is in full swing and that means crazy busy days filled with all kinds of activities! With one kiddo in High School this year, and one homeschooled we have a lot going on! Daniel and I are off and running to homeschool classes, co-ops and events and Nathan is gearing up for his first High School swim season.
Our day starts early with driving Nathan to school at 7am, from there I’m working here on my blog, then grabbing cup of coffee #2 before I get started with schooling the little one. Actually our mornings tend to be a little more laid back and quiet. Our afternoons though? They can get a little hectic! There’s errands to run, a kiddo to get from school, practices, lessons, play dates… all the things!!
I don’t know about you but that afternoon slump can hit me pretty hard sometimes! I know I have a lot to do and I lose my motivation somewhere between noon and 2pm.
Since opting out of everyone’s activities, not cooking dinner, and heading to bed isn’t an option I have several ways of upping my energy level mid day so that my afternoons can be as productive as my mornings!
1- Grab an Iced Coffee– I have no shame in my love for coffee. It fuels my greatness everyday! I love a fresh brewed cup in the morning, but in the afternoon I’m often in the mood for something more cool and refreshing. That’s when I reach for a Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee. They come in delicious flavors like vanilla, mocha, original and espresso, so there is one to suit every mood! Whats great about them is there is no need to leave the house and go through the drive through, I just stock up on them when I do my weekly grocery shopping at Giant Eagle so I have them on hand!
2-Take a 20 minute power nap– I love a nice long nap, but studies show that 20 minutes is the ideal time for a quick power nap. Its something to do with the sleep cycle and stages of sleep that a quick 20 minutes leaves you feeling rested and refreshed. If you’ve got little ones snuggle up on the couch and turn on their favorite 1/2 hour show while you doze. If your kids are older just tell them you’re having a rest and snuggle up in your bed! Set an alarm so that you don’t over sleep!
3- Rest and relax for 20-30 minutes- If you’re not a napper another great way to feel rested is to just take a break. Sit down on the couch and relax for 20-30 minutes with a good book, or magazine and a Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee! Taking a breather can help you refuel for the rest of the day!
4- Meditate for 10-20 minutes – Meditation is a great way to relax and feel refreshed. There is something about clearing your mind for even 10 minutes that helps you feel more focused and ready to face the rest of your day! If you’ve never meditated before don’t worry there are great apps to get you started! I personally love headspace, and another good one is Calm. Give it a try you’ll be glad you did!
5- Sneak in a quick workout– Getting your blood moving is an awesome way to have more energy! Hop on the treadmill or elipitical, pop in a workout dvd, or look up a quick workout on youtube! Even a walk outside, or a few exercises like jumping jacks, push ups etc in your living room can be a great way to get moving and feel energized!
6- Eat a high protein snack- Protein is a great pick me up that keeps you fueled for a long time! When you need an afternoon snack reach for something that is high protein. Greek yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, beef jerky, or protein bars are quick options that will give you sustained energy throughout your afternoon! I like to stock up for the week while I’m at Giant Eagle, I love to pair a Greek Yogurt and granola with my Dunkin’ Donuts Iced Coffee!
7-Do a few yoga poses- I’m classifying this separate from the quick workout because I think yoga is a little different. It is lower intensity, a little mix of workout and meditation it is a great way to feel great! Spending about 15-20 minutes doing yoga can help alleviate stress, get your blood moving and energize you! If you’re just starting out check on youtube for beginner yoga moves, or specifically yoga to boost energy!
8- Get ready for evening & bedtime- This one might sound weird but it really works! I know for me when I have a busy afternoon I tend to put off things like putting away the laundry that’s covering my bed, emptying the dishwasher, and prepping for dinner to the last-minute. I find if I know my day is going to be busy getting those things done earlier helps me relax through the afternoon. That way I know that when I am done with my busy day dinner and clean up will be quick and easy and my bed is waiting for me!
9- Take a quick shower- I know most people shower in the morning or in the evening, so it might sound strange to hop in the shower in the middle of the day. However, if you need to feel refreshed, wake up a little and get energized a quick, cool shower is a great way to do it. It doesn’t need to be long, just a quick in and out to feel clean, revived, and refreshed.
10- Call a friend- There is something about talking to someone that always wakes me up! Getting on the phone with a good friend and laughing, talking about our lives, and catching up always leaves me feeling better! If you’re feeling unmotivated, not wanting to get up and moving and need to pep yourself up for the rest of your day make a quick phone call to a good friend or family member! Now if you’re like me and can end up on the phone for 2 hours at a time make sure you set a timer and get off when you need to, otherwise you’ll be running late and that will cause a whole other issue with your afternoon!
How do you power through your busy days? Do you have a tip I didn’t include? I’d love to hear them!
