**This is an honest review of Praxis. All opinions are 100% mine. I was compensated for my time.
Last year my oldest graduated from high school last year and started college this year. Anthony has always been an “in the box” kind of kid. We started homeschooling him in 2nd grade with a cyber school program that he was with through 10th grade. In his Junior year he went back to “regular” school and did just fine. He was always a kid who learned through traditional teaching methods and didn’t need a lot of creativity in his teaching. He knew that college was his next step and that he definitely wanted to go that route… although he didn’t know what for.
Nathan on the other hand is an entirely different child. He’s in 8th grade this year and I can already tell that his future will probably not be quite as traditional. He’s a kid who needs to learn a little differently. He does really well teaching himself, he does really well with hands on activities. He tends to get a little distracted unless he’s interested in something and wanting to learn about it! We realized early on in his education that he certainly doesn’t fit in a box and that sometimes a little creativity is necessary in educating him! I’ve often wondered if college would be the right fit for him and what he’ll end up doing after high school. (Then there’s Daniel, he does school work in a Santa hat… who knows where he’ll end up!)
I have to say here that I think that the whole college thing is a little crazy. It’s been hard for me to watch Anthony with the pressure of trying to figure out what he wants to do for the REST OF HIS LIFE at 18…. it’s a lot of pressure. What do you want to do, where are you going, student loans, scholarships, majors, minors…. it stresses me out and I’m not the one dealing with it. It’s his path though and I’m sure he’ll navigate it and figure it out as he goes along.
However, I’ve always thought it would be nice if there were other options.
Guess what? There is an excellent alternative to college.
Let me introduce you to Praxis, a genius idea that is an amazing alternative to college. What Praxis does is a modern-day apprenticeship with an entrepreneurial boot camp, 1-on-1 professional coaching, self guided projects, and a paid apprenticeship at a startup company. But wait there’s more they have a guaranteed post program job offer with the average starting salary of 50k a year!
I don’t know about you but when I saw this I thought it is exactly what someone like my Nathan needs. It’s an awesome way to get training, job experience, mentorship, and education in a creative and immersive way. Not your traditional classroom, note taking and tests, but hands on involvement in a real business.
For a graduate who wants to jump into their life, or who doesn’t like the idea of college Praxis is not only a great alternative but one with a ton of perks.
Why Praxis appeals to homeschoolers-
Let’s face it, as homeschoolers we’ve looked at education and decided maybe there is a better approach, maybe our child needs something different. Often homeschooling is nontraditional, with hands on activities, co-ops, working toward mastery instead of tests, and catering to our children’s strengths and weaknesses.
Praxis has the same idea. There is no such thing as a one size fits all education, there is often a better way to approach an innovative way that leads to success down a different path.
Another perk? Praxis loves homeschoolers! They’ve had tons of homeschooled students apply and find that they are some of the best applicants. Take a look at this article on their site about why homeschoolers should stop trying to get into college, it raises some excellent points. Since homeschoolers tend to be self learners, curious, and have often been able to pursue their own passions and interest they’re already on the right path to succeed in Praxis’ program.
Want more information? Here’s where to find it-
I could go on all day about how awesome I think this program is, and how I can see us clicking on the link to apply in four years or so. I love that there is an alternative to college for kids who can benefit from it, and a way to jump-start their adult life in a very successful way!
