I cannot believe how quickly this summer has flown by, I mean seriously… so super fast!! I don’t know about you but we are in full back to school mode here at my house. As fellow homeschool moms probably know that means my dining room table is piled high with workbooks and curriculum as I decide how to organize this coming year. I know my friends whose kids go to public school are packing backpacks, checking supply lists and running around getting it all together…
It’s a hectic time of year for sure!
Part of my planning is always looking at what options we have for homeschool co-ops, groups, field trips etc. Those groups are an important part of our schooling so scheduling around the ones we want to attend is a big part of planning our upcoming year. In my planning this year I was penciling in dates for my book club and had a great idea…. why not start one for the kids??
I love belonging to a book club, I love talking about books with my friends and reading books that they’ve picked out that I might not normally pick myself.
Being part of a book club gets you reading a variety of subjects and books, it encourages you to read even if you’re busy or not in the mood.
If a book club does that for me as an adult, wouldn’t it be the perfect thing to encourage my kids to read more?? I certainly think so. Whether your child is homeschooled or in public school a book club is a great thing to enrich their reading experience and get them reading more!
So I’m planning and it is coming along beautifully… and so, I’m sharing my tips and the awesome printable I’ve made up with you my dear readers, because getting your kiddos to read is awesome!
Before I get into the nitty-gritty details of book club planning I want to tell you about something that will make planning even easier! Seriously making life easier is always a win right??
Well if you’ve read my blog before you might know that I love Sam’s Club… seriously, and not just for the free samples! I love that I can stock up on products my family needs, keep my pantry stocked and find all sorts of awesome stuff all in one trip. Well, back to school is no exception so that’s where we head for supplies like paper, pens, pencils, even things like calculators! Plus I can stock up on quick easy snacks for my hungry boys… and awesome snacks for things like, well… book club gatherings!!
Right now if you head to Sam’s Club like I did and grab a few boxes of delicious snacks for your kid’s book club you have the added bonus of being able to get free books from Scholastic… yes life made easier, get the snacks and the book… you’re all set!! I picked out some of our very favorite snacks- Cheez-It Crackers, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies Treats, and Famous Amos Cookies… yum and in great snack size packages for hungry kids (and hubby’s… mine promptly put one of each in his lunch box!)

So now you’ve got books and snacks… you’re well on your way to an awesome book club! Here’s my other tips for starting.
Decide on an age group/ grade level- You can include any one you want in your group, all ages, all levels, but you might want to narrow it down. Do you have friends with kids around the same age? Consider making it a 1st- 3rd grade group or one just for middle school. Having all the kids be around the same age or reading level will make book choice and discussion much easier. I know my 8th grader wouldn’t want to read something that’s a 2nd grade level, and since this is all about getting them to read more so you want to make sure the books are fun for them!
Make a list of participants – Who do you want to invite? Who would be interested? Make a list of friends you’d love to see involved and ask them if they want to participate, see if they have another friend to bring!
Decide how to pick books- We’ve already established we want to look at grade level but what else? Do you want to go with a theme? Maybe biographies or historical fiction! How will you pick? Do you want to find a list or maybe just let every member take turns picking their favorite books? It’s a great idea to have a sense of what you want to be reading before you get started!
Where will you meet?- For me, my house is small so group size determines if we can meet here or not. Have some other places in mind, maybe the library, a church or community center. Maybe you can go from house to house each month? You’ll need a comfortable place to gather!
Will you have other activities?– Are you going to just have an awesome book discussion or are you going to do more? Maybe you want to watch the movie version of the book or do an art project that goes with the theme of the story. Knowing what you’d like to do in addition to reading will help you plan, you’ll know how long the meetings will be and how much involvement you need from the other parents!
