I’ve always loved introducing my boys to books that were my favorites as a child. In fact a couple of weeks ago at a used book sale I picked up a whole pile of stories that brought back child hood memories.
Fortunately many of my favorites my mom saved over the years and passed down to my kiddos. One of them that they have all three shared a love for is “Golly Gump Swallowed a Fly“.
This funny story about the man who won first place at the county fair yawning competition is funny and crazy ridiculous. He doesn’t cover his mouth when he yawns and it starts a chain reaction much like the little old lady who swallowed a fly.

For my craft we made these cute little egg carton flies. Although unlike Mr. Golly Gump we’ll be sure to cover our mouths when we yawn!
Here’s what you’ll need-
A Milk Carton
Black Paint (tempera or acrylic work great!)
A Black Marker
A Paint Brush
The first thing you want to do is cut little fly bodies. Cut around 2 bumps.
Then trim around the edges to make them nice and neat and so they’ll sit flat.
Now you want to give them a nice coat of paint.
Once it’s dry you can stick eyes on with a little dot of glue on each.
Fold your parchment in half and draw a tear drop shape. Cut it out making 2 wings.
Then using your marker draw lines on the wings starting at the point and drawing down to the edge.
Now put a couple of dots of glue on the top of the egg carton and stick on your wings.
Let the glue dry and you’re ready to play with your new little bug friends!
Just make sure to cover your mouth when you yawn!
