I’ve been without a dishwasher for almost 2 years, you don’t realize how much you miss having one until you don’t. When we renovated my kitchen a couple of months ago we put one in and it is wonderful. However, dishes keep piling up in my sink because it seems that no one remembers we have it… Then I remembered this post, and the handy dandy printable sign that I created that worked wonders.
So I printed a new one for my new kitchen. And because it is so useful I decided this post needed to be revived!
I have a dishwasher.
I love the person who invented dishwashers with all my heart.
I have a teenager who’s job it is to empty the said dishwasher. Which is lovely.
But what I also almost always have is a sink overflowing somewhat full of dirty dishes.
“Could you guys please put your dishes in the dishwasher, instead of the sink?” I have implored these boys who live with me many many times.
I may also be slightly to blame myself… but mostly it’s them.
I reached a point of great frustration the other day. Fueled by the fact that my house was a mess, my children were uncooperative and maybe just a touch of PMS, I was fighting to keep my cool.
As I loaded the dishwasher for what I knew would be the first of 7.6 million times that day I was struck by genius.
|It says “STOP Put it in the Dishwasher! (you may move this to rinse your dish then put it back)
My handwriting is atrocious, I am aware.
It’s not pretty, I know. My other idea was plywood but I thought that might be over kill. The idea was a barrier, and a reminder without me having to nag.
Almost immediately Nathan read the sign and proceeded to put a dish in the sink. Soooo we had to go over what the sign meant… ahem.
For 3 days it sat there. And let me tell you, my sink has never been so empty. It’s a reminder to everyone that the dishwasher is right there.
I have trouble forming habits, the whole “it takes 21 days to form a habit” thing? I’m pretty sure I get to about day 9 1/2 and it all goes to hell. But I am a visual learner, and so are my children…and husband. So this works for us.
But it was ugly.
So I made this.
Who knows how long I’ll have to keep it there until we form the habit. But now that it’s pretty I don’t much care. Even my ugly crayon scribbled one I would have kept, just because it was effective.
But effective and pretty? Yes Please!
I was so super excited about it that I decided I would make this genius idea available to you my friends and dear readers. So I have for you, my very first…
I’ve included arrows pointing to the left or the right so where ever your dishwasher is this will work for you!
