If you’ve been reading my blog for a while of follow me on Pinterest you know that I love an awesome DIY beauty product.
I love using things that are all natural, I love being able to customize scents, I love pretty much everything about them.
Except the mess.
Let’s face it, if you’ve ever made anything that has beeswax in it you know it is a difficult substance to clean up.
How about shea butter and coconut oil…. greasy messy mess.
A great idea is to designate special tools just for your beauty endeavors but if you’re just starting out or don’t have a place to store all that extra stuff, or maybe don’t want to make the investment…
I’m here to help!!
First let’s look at the double boiler. Almost every recipe is going to call for one of these puppies.
You could run to the local Walmart or kitchen store and pick one up for around $20
For small batch items a little can works really well. (this one is from a can of Vienna Sausages) This is the perfect size for about a dozen lip balms. For larger batches you can use a larger can. You just have to make sure your can isn’t floating, adjust the water accordingly.
When you’re done you can just pitch the can and dump the water out of the pan. Super easy clean up!
Now lets talk filling lip balm tubes.
They make special trays that will hold them up nicely but why buy something when you have the perfect solution right in your kitchen?
In a lovely coincidence it just so happens that the little circle on the bottom of a typical egg carton is exactly the same size as a lip balm tube.
And let me tell you, you underestimate how much a lip balm tube can hold until it’s spilling all over your kitchen counter!
Just cut the top off of the carton, take a knife or razor and cut out the circles. Set it on a flat surface and you’re ready to roll!
Now how about transferring the hot mixtures into their containers??
A turkey baster works. But even better is a medicine dispenser.
The best part? Stop by your local pharmacy and they’ll usually give them to you for free! They’re great because if you need to measure it’s marked on the side. They don’t drip and make filling containers a breeze.
As a caution though work quickly. If the plunger part gets hard to push down, stop, just sit it in your double boiler full of liquid for a minute to let it warm up again. If you force it, it may give way and spurt everywhere.
How about creams? Things like my magnesium cream or body butters that need emulsified.
There is little better way to do it then with your blender. But who really wants to clean lotion out of their blender?
The solution? Our friend the Mason Jar. If you didn’t already know most standard blender blades will screw onto a Mason Jar.
So now you don’t have to clean out the carafe of your blender! Even better if you have an old broken blender or can pick up one cheaply at a thrift store or garage sale designate a blade just for beauty products!
A couple of other things I recommend are , bamboo skewers for mixing, silicone muffin liners, silicone molds and lots of paper towels, all of those things will make your DIY life easier!
Ok now go get started! What’s your favorite beauty product to make? Have any great tips to share?
