You’ve heard of a Philly Cheese Steak right?
But how about a Pittsburgh Style Sandwich?
The lesser known sandwich from across the state is, I believe, even tastier then its eastern cousin.
Because Pitts-burghers in their wonderfully weird, why would you do that?? way… added french fries.
They also add french fries to salads… fries are a big thing here. So is football… in case you didn’t know. (Although we don’t watch it.. were a bit of an anomaly in this area.)
If you’ve ever been to the ‘Burgh you’ve probably seen a Primanti Bros. somewhere along the way, and if you’re lucky have stopped to eat there.
After making a Philly Cheese Steak Casserole I found on Pinterest, Super Hubby said, “This could be better, it’s ok, but it could be better.”
Brainstorming ensued, the idea of fries was added, and bam… this awesomely delicious recipe was born!
This is not health food…. it is not low-fat… the french fries may have tipped you off, but I’m forewarning you now…. it is however incredibly tasty, these Pitts-burghers are on to something.
Here’s what you’ll need-
1-Pkg frozen french fries
1/2-1 loaf bakery Italian bread
1- Pkg Sandwich steaks (such as Steak’em) 14 count
3- Cups Shredded Mozzarella cheese
1- Green Pepper
First get your french fries cooking, just cook them according to the package directions.
Once they’re cooked set them aside while you put everything else together.
Grease a 13×9 inch pan with olive oil. & get your oven preheated to 400
Cut your Italian bread into bite size pieces (think big croutons) you need enough to cover the bottom of the pan. Once you have enough chopped place them in the pan, drizzle them with olive oil, sprinkle them with garlic powder and toss them until evenly coated.
Now put them in the oven. Cook them for 15-20 minutes, until they are a nice golden brown. Check on them at 5 minute intervals and flip/stir them so they brown evenly.
While your bread is cooking chop your onion and green pepper into bite size pieces.
Saute your veggies in a little olive oil until they are cooked through, you don’t want them mushy but pretty well cooked. You can add salt & pepper to them to taste.
Now it’s time to cook your sandwich steaks. Break them into pieces and get them cooking. Cook until they are all done and then drain them thoroughly on a paper towel lined plate.
Ok, now it’s time to assemble your casserole.
Layer your french fries on top of your bread. Now cover that layer with 1 1/2 cups of your shredded mozzarella.
Now layer on your meat and veggies.
And last but not least top it off with the rest of your cheese.
Now pop it in the oven for about 20 minutes or until the cheese is nicely melted.
When you’re ready to serve it give it a nice drizzle of mayo across the top. (we cut the corner off a sandwich bag and squeeze it through, alternately you could just kind of smear some on)
Now sit back and enjoy the taste of Pittsburgh. If you’re so inclined pair this with a Steelers game, a can of IC Light, and say “Yinz guys,” and you’ll feel like a Pittsburgh native.
