When I made my menu plan last week I was feeling in a bit of a rut.
So of course I turned to a menu planners BFF, Pinterest.
Awhile back I pinned “Oven Hot Dogs” because they looked super tasty. (I would love to give credit to the original recipe, but the pin was one of those that when you clicked on it said it was reported that it went to an “inappropriate” website)
What went through my head though was… “hot dogs for dinner, but fancy, so they seem like dinner and not just hot dogs… ok yeah, let’s do that.”
And after spending several hours yesterday outside doing lots and lots of “it’s been one hell of a winter” yard work, quick easy hot dogs were about all I was making.
I will not try and tell you these are healthy… they are hot dogs… on white buns.. with canned chili… if you are a whole foods kind of person, or cringe at the unorganic… turn away now!! (but if you are you probably didn’t click on this recipe anyway)
But I will tell you they are really really good. They were a winner with everyone in this house! This recipe is really easy to customize for size too!
Here’s what you’ll need
-Hot Dogs-(I used Ball Park Bun length) I ended up making 12 because that’s what would fit in my pan.
-Hot Dog buns– obviously as many as you have hot dogs.
– Chili- I used the canned stuff. You could use homemade and make these even tastier! 1 can does about 8 hot dogs.
– 1 Small Onion- Diced
– 2 Cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Get your oven preheating to 350 degrees
You may want to line your pan with foil, these are a bit messy. You can use a 9×13 baking pan, for 8 hot dogs.
Now spread Mayo on the insides of your hot dog buns. Do not worry that this will make the buns soggy… it won’t.
Next put your hot dogs in the buns and place them all in the baking pan. It’s ok if they’re crammed in there, it helps the toppings stay on.
Now spoon some chili down the center of each hot dog, sprinkle them with onions, and then top with cheese. (there are no measurements here because it’s all a matter of personal preference )
Cover your baking pan with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
You could serve these up with a nice salad or veggie… or tater tots, because tater tots are delicious with chili dogs!!
